Unfortunately, we all know that with the lifestyle of today between work, families and any extra curricular activities, we may have to accept that eating healthy may sometimes become tricky. This becomes even more difficult with the convenience of having the accessibility of fast food at our finger tips. But there are options out there that can allow us to make better choices in diets even while dining at a fast food restaurant.

No matter which fast food place you frequently visit there are better options in selecting foods that may be healthier for us all. The big key to healthful eating in a fast food restaurant is to know what to select and how to balance it with the rest of the meals for that day.

Healthful Hints:

Choose main dish items that are lowest in fat. So, instead of eating a bacon cheeseburger, have a regular hamburger or a grilled chicken sandwich.

Have a side salad instead of french fries, the salad has extra vitamins and dietary fiber without the extra calories and fat content. Use low or non-fat dressing as well to complete without adding unnecessary fat.

Select grilled or baked foods instead of the fried or breaded foods. Choose whole wheat or whole grain buns and rolls. Have fresh fruit or low fat frozen yogurt for dessert.

Tips for Portion Size:

Choose the smallest size possible, especially with fried food or high fat content foods.

Share large or high fat items with someone else.

Only eat half of your order and take the rest home.

Key Take Home Points When Eating Fast Food:

Cut down on total fat, saturated fat, trans fat and sodium.

Increase whole grains.

Increase intake of fruit and vegetables.
