Healthier Cooking for Your Family: Making Safe Foods for Everyone

Deborah
Because I make the food that members of my family eat, I know I have the ability to make changes in their diets that will help improve their health. This is something I take seriously after finding out a few health issues in those I love, and want to do all I can to assist them in improving their health. The family is at our mercy and eventually they will eat what we put on the table. Eating healthy is something everyone can do, but they first have to set their mind to making the necessary changes to do so. That seems to be the biggest obstacle for those I've talked with about this issue of eating healthy.

Stew is one easy meal to make healthy. You can still make your stew with meat, but replace about half of the meat with carrots. This will not only be healthier for your family, but will also make the grocery bill a little lighter. A change in your diet often means a big change in your grocery bill, but going with more vegetables and less meat will actually lower your grocery bill while improving your family's health. Another option for stew would be to make a vegetable stew, with no meat. You can add some grains as well. Stew with rice, orzo, barley, or buckwheat is a wonderful healthy meal for your family.

You can also make burgers into a healthy meal with a bit of oatmeal and vegetables. Grated carrots, peppers, onions, even squash will help that burger become a healthier choice for your family. I also throw an egg in there to keep it all together. The use of spices like cilantro, cayenne pepper, or anything your family especially likes will quickly turn this healthy burger into a gourmet burger they will be asking for again and again.

Include a large salad with lots of vegetables with your evening meals. You can use any green leaves in the salad such as celery, spinach, lettuce, bok choi, and even cabbage. Add finely cut zucchini or squash as they are both remarkably tasty raw. Peppers not only had great flavor, but also a burst of color that makes the salad look even more appetizing. Tomatoes, radishes, onions, broccoli, carrots all will not only add nutrition but even more color to your salads, and the flavor combinations are endless.

Toppings for your salad will also provide great variety in your healthier meals, and lots of flavor as well. Nuts can be expensive, but they do add a new dimension to any salad. You can also use raisins, coconut, and any fruit of your choice. This increases the nutrition of an already healthy choice, but also increases the flavor to please everyone in your family. The salad will also be new every day with your different combinations and choices. A sure pleaser for even the pickiest eaters in your family.

The dressing you choose for the salad will also be another way you can make healthy choices, and a variety of flavors. Lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, and honey make a wonderful dressing, and are very easy to make. If you prefer a creamier dressing yogurt is a great base, and then add spices to get the desired flavor such as cilantro, dill, or Italian seasonings. You can add a red bell pepper if you prefer a red creamy dressing. The possibilities are only as limited as your imagination.

When it comes to eggs, they are a great source of protein and an affordable meal. You can quickly turn it into a healthy meal by frying up some onions, garlic, peppers, squash, mushrooms or any vegetable and adding it to your scrambled eggs. It makes it healthy, and also makes a few eggs go a long way.

Gradual changes and persistence is important as you begin to make healthy changes for your family. Accepting that cooking fresh, from scratch is more time consuming, but when you aren't filling your family with the chemicals from the prepackaged foods, you will be thankful for the time it takes you to make the healthy changes they need. That should motivate you, even when you don't feel up to the challenge. Know that your effort is making them much healthier.
