Pasta is a really simple and delicious meal that is versatile and feels comforting. But for people watching their waistline, too much pasta can be the enemy. Fortunately, there are alternatives that allow you to indulge in your favorite pasta dishes without also indulging in the calories and carbs that pasta brings to the dinner table.
Spaghetti Squash
Spaghetti Squash is an easy and very healthy alternative to carb and calorie dense pastas. Available in most grocery stores, spaghetti squash is very simple to prepare. It can be baked in the oven, or even cooked quickly in the microwave. To microwave a spaghetti squash, simply puncture it several times with a knife and microwave for about ten to fifteen minutes. After letting it cool for a few minutes, cut the squash in half, lengthwise. Scoop out the seeds and discard or roast for a tasty snack. The make the flesh of the squash look like spaghetti, simply fluff it with a fork and serve with your favorite sauce.
Spiralized Vegetables
Spiralized vegetables such as carrots or zucchini are a great way to nix the starchy pasta and fill up on healthy vegetables while satisfying your craving for pasta and sauce. Spiralizers are available in many stores, but you can thinly slice the veggies in a pinch if you don't have one. The veggies can be served raw with sauce, but taste even better if they are lightly steamed or sauteed first. One of my favorite recipes is to toss spiralized carrots in a pan with salt, pepper, and a little olive oil. Once the carrots cook up, I like to top them with a sprinkle of parmesan for a great healthy meal that tastes indulgent.
Alternative Pastas
There are many alternative pastas that are widely available these days. Whole wheat pasta is just as satisfying as regular pasta, but considerably healthier. Unfortunately, it contains virtually the same carbs and calories as regular pasta, so it should be consumed sparingly. Shirataki noodles are almost calorie free and are available only and in many grocery stores. These noodles, made from a japanese yam, are a great pasta alternative if you can stomach the chewy texture.
Pasta is great in moderation, but if you crave pasta often, try these pasta alternatives to make your meals healthier and more nutritionally satisfying. Creativity in the kitchen might lead you to trying even more alternatives that satisfy your pasta cravings without clogging your arteries or tightening your jeans.
