Healthy Breakfast for School Days

Amanda Wilson
It's about that time again where students are repeatedly told to get out of bed and meet yet another new day to go to school. As most know it is said that the best way to start a day is a hearty and healthy breakfast. A healthy breakfast in studies has proven to increase energy, boost metabolism, keeps blood sugar levels stable and aid in weight loss.

Those who eat healthy breakfasts can concentrate better, so students can give their undivided attention throughout the day. Memory and problem-solving skills are also aided as well as their energy levels. Energy level is very important and can be easily detected by those students who do not eat breakfast in their constant yawning and lethargic demeanor in the mornings while waiting for the bus or the school bell.

Staying away from sugary breakfasts is a pretty good idea since sugary meals tends to boost sugar levels. This causes the body to burn calories right away then leading to hunger quicker and earlier in the day and cravings for carbohydrates which can cause weight gain if too much in consumed. Eating a healthy breakfast stops one from consuming extra calories throughout the day therefore stopping the weight gain that we are seeing become more popular in children these days. Studies by Journal of the American College of Nutrition have shown that eating protein such as eggs have been able to keep the person feeling fuller and longer, satisfying the person and discouraging hunger pangs.

There are many good ideas in which to creating a healthy breakfast. Eggs, omelets and grains are ideal for students. The eggs can be made in any way desired. Vegetables and berries should also take some room up at the breakfast table. Even, in moderate proportions, sausage, bacon, and turkey bacon, can give that extra boost and every child wanting to make time for breakfast. Waffle's and pancakes are fine as well, if they are whole grain or buckwheat, that's even better. Remember while having pancakes and waffles it is ideal to use moderate servings of syrup, powder sugar, etc. For those who wake up late, toast with peanut butter and a fruit is a great substitute.

Getting up early everyday can be hard, let alone making sure you have a good breakfast when one has dragged their feet or stayed in their slow motion mode for too long. When this happens, going out for breakfast for that omelet or standing at the stove preparing breakfast isn't ideal. To say, keeping the freezer stocked with quick, healthy, microwaveable breakfasts such as Jimmy Dean's D-Lights Breakfast Sandwich's or Jimmy Dean's Breakfast Bowls. Hot Pocket's have even came out with breakfast style hot pockets which are quite excellent. Name brand things can get expensive especially when you're on a budget. Remember, the name brand things are just as good, just as healthy, and just as delicious as name brand items.

Lastly, if there is nothing else in the house or the fast food restaurants are on your way to the school you may always stop there. As long as you pick healthy items from the menu, such as the McDonald's McSkillet or their breakfast burrito's it is better than not eating at all. McDonald's also offers yogurts with fruits, nuts, and granola. If you should find yourself in the drive through lane of a fast food restaurant don't feel guilty. There have been case studies among college students that have proven it is better to eat at least something, even if it is last night's pizza, casserole, or chips and salsa, than nothing at all. Please keep in mind the proper servings by the food pyramid.
