Healthy Breastfeeding is Not Just for Babies Anymore

While I was pregnant with my second child, I made the decision to breastfeed. Admittedly, my decision was made primarily on the fact that I knew nutritionally it was the best choice for him. Added immunities as well as the ease in digestion lessening the chances of colic were definitely selling points. However, upon further research on the subject of breastfeeding opened my eyes to the benefits I would reap in making the decision to breastfeed.
Breastfeeding mothers can benefit in the following manners:

1. Speed of recovery postpartum- breastfeeding helps the uterus decrease back to its pre-pregnancy size.

2. Women who breastfeed tend to have a lower risk of various cancers, including breast cancer.

3. Increased metabolism- the sheer act of producing milk through lactation burns calories.

4. Breastfeeding produces hormones, which suppresses fertility. These hormones work as an effective form of family planning when the mother breastfeeds exclusively.

5. Women who breastfeed tend to experience postpartum depression in much lower rates than women who opt not to breastfeed.

Sure, breastfeeding isn't the easiest option- it requires commitment. I will be the first to admit it. In fact there are times when it isn't very convenient, and engorgement isn't very pleasant. To this, I suggest any new mother planning on breastfeeding to purchase a breast pump. While allowing the infant to reap the benefits of breast milk, a breast pump also allows the mother flexibility- especially if she is returning to work after a maternity leave. Mothers who pump can also reap the above stated health benefits that come along with breastfeeding.

Support for breastfeeding is readily available for new mothers shortly after delivery. In fact many hospitals offer lactation consultation as well as various reading materials covering frequently asked questions that any new mother would have regarding breastfeeding. Also, many cities have a La Leche League which offer emotional support to breastfeeding mothers while allowing them a way to network and make friends. Local La Leche Leagues can be located on the Internet by location.

With all this being said, I believe that breastfeeding should be the natural decision for any new mother.
I hope this has helped you or has even given you some good information and knowledge. Please share this with the ones you know and love. Enjoy and Thanks for taking the time to read what I have to say.
