Healthy and Cheap First Dates in Washington DC

Anne Wright
Healthy and cheap first dates in Washington DC can help you stick to your fitness routine, and ease the pressure while you get to know each other. These are 3 dating ideas for fit and frugal Washingtonians.

Tidal Basin Paddle Boating

For scenic dating, view the Jefferson Memorial and the Cherry Blossom Trees from the water. You can show your date how smart you are by pre-registering online to guarantee a boat rental and beat the lines. It's just $10 per hour for a 2 passenger boat. Pre-registrations are accepted for hours between 10 and noon, and the Tidal Basin Boat House is open for walk-up business until 6 with the last boats departing at 5. Weather permitting, they're open every day from March 15 through Labor Day, and open Wednesday through Sunday after Labor Day through Columbus Day weekend. Life vests are required and included. The boathouse is located at 1501 Maine Avenue SW (202.479.2426).

I love the tidal basin and just wish the cherry blossoms would last longer because it seems like a hard rain always kills them off soon after they bloom. The paddle boats are a great way to get away from the crowd and enjoy the view while it lasts.

Indoor Rock Climbing

Enhance your dating with a premier rock climbing experience. Sportrock Climbing Centers provides comprehensive climbing facilities with programs and instructors for all skill levels. Daily and rental rates are $18 for adults with an all gear rental fee of $11. There are 2 convenient Virginia locations in Alexandria (5308 Eisenhower Avenue; 703.212.7625; open Monday through Friday noon to 11 and weekends 10 to 6) and Sterling (45935 Maries Road; 571.434.7625; open Monday through Friday noon to 11 and weekends noon to 8). New participants must fill out a waiver form available online. I prefer Pilates myself, but I know people who have enjoyed it.

National Arboretum Walking Tour

If you're dating a tree hugger, stroll through the National Arboretum. It covers 446 acres with all kinds of plants plus the pillars from the original U.S. Capitol that was burned during the War of 1812. You can plan your tour at the Administration Building. It's open every day but Christmas from 8 to 4:30 and until 5 on weekends. Admission is free, and it's located at 3501 New York Avenue NE (202.245.2726). I go as often as possible and love the dogwood trees and all the exhibits.
