In the average lifetime meat consumers eat 1 calf, 3 lambs, 11 cows, 23 hogs, 45 turkeys, 1,097 chickens, and 15,665 chicken eggs. As a result meat consumers are more likely to contract heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and osteoporois. However, if they were to turn vegetarian they would live six years longer, contracting fewer illnesses than meat consumers.
Another reason many people turn vegetarian is for religious reasons. Mormons, Jews, Wiccans, Hindus, and Buddhists are just a few examples of religions with dietary laws, that are excepted by vegetarians.
More and more land is being destroyed because of meat consumer's habits. One acre of land, produces 165 pounds of beef while it could raise 20,000 pounds of potatoes. If you were to switch to a vegetarian lifestyle you could save that extra 120 acres you would need to raise the same amount of beef.
In conclusion, there are many reasons why people should become a vegetarian or just limit their meat intake. For example, a person can live healthier, support their religion, and help the environment by converting to vegetarianism.
