Healthy Fast Food for Kids

In today's society of busy families, fast foods are an easy, convenient and cheap way to feed kids. Fast foods, though, are notorious for not being a healthy way to eat for adults or growing kids as they are high in calories, fat, saturated fats, sugar and salt. Even the best of intentioned parents sometimes have to consider fast foods as an option for themselves and their kids. When this is the case, there are some good things to remember about how to select fast foods that makes it a healthier food choice for kids. Be sure to check the calorie information on the fast food menu, check out the fast food menu for the amount of salt added to fast food items and look over the nutritional information on a fast food menu related to the amount of fat included in food items.

Healthy Fast Food Restaurants for Kids

One of the first things to think about when choosing a fast food restaurant for kids is to look for ones that have salads, soups and vegetables on their fast food menu. Although these sound like healthy foods for kids, there may be hidden concerns such as the kind of fat used in the salad dressings, dipping sauces and in the meats and preparation process of the soups. Another concern is the amount of salt as well as the number of calories in each food item.

Healthy Fast Food Size of Servings for Kids

One of the most unhealthy aspects of fast food, is that many fast food places allow you to "super size" a terribly unhealthy meal for only a few more cents. This approach to marketing fast foods has created a societal health risk issue. People are always looking for the best deal, or trying to save money. In our society, we have been taught to eat everything on our plates. When we "super size" what is on our plates with hundreds of extra calories, salt and fat, we have created a time bomb waiting to explode-obesity. One way to counter-act this tendency to want to get the best deal is to think about sharing a "super sized" meal between several kids. You can also purchase a "super sized" meal and ask, up front, for a doggy bag. Before starting to eat, divide up the meal into reasonable portions for kids and then take the rest home for another meal or snack.

Healthy Fast Food Snacks for Kids

Many fast food restaurants have added fresh fruits, yogurt and fresh vegetables to their menus. These food items are typically a healthy choice for kids and most kids enjoy these. Another suggestion is to buy a fast food meal that is reasonably healthy and then to eat dessert at home where you have more control over the health quality of snacks.
