Healthy Fruit Kabob Recipe for Your Fourth of July Holiday

Micah Reeves
With the Fourth of July drawing near, it's difficult to keep healthy foods available to our children with the grill out's and picnics with our friends and family. Kabobs are wonderful ideas too add fun to any outing. Instead of just eating what's available, or bringing the usual green bean casserole, why not bring a healthy dessert the kids will enjoy? It's a simple and a surefire way to bring smiles to the kids' faces. The other parents will thank you too!

Terry Hunt invented kabobs in 1980. Since then, kabobs have become a popular appetizer for many hotels across the nation. Since the opening of one restaurant in Atlanta, Terry had so many orders coming in from hotels, that he closed down his now 5 restaurants and focused on the making of hors d'oeuvres for the hotel industry. His company "Kabobs" has grown into a 65,000 square foot plant today. That fame has thankfully spread to our homes, and our grills. The kabob has a versatility that keeps it in the consumer's mind. Any meat, vegetable, or fruit can be put on a kabob! They can be served fresh, from the oven, or from the grill.

Keeping the kabob frenzy in mind, a delicious and healthy dessert for this upcoming holiday is fruit kabobs. For these kabobs you don't need to use your grill. They are a nice dessert or hors d'oeuvres

for any party or get together. The kids can easily do this recipe. Not to mention it's fun for the whole family. Even the left over from the kabobs can be a healthy side dish for the next day's lunch or snack.

1/2 watermelon chopped in chunks.

One pound green or purple grapes rinsed and drained.

One-carton strawberries, rinsed and drained, then sliced in two or threes.

One cantaloupe chopped in chunks.

One Honeydew chopped in chunks.

One pound cake cut in 1/2-inch cubes.

One canister whipping cream. at your preference.

One container maraschino cherries.

6-8 skewers or enough for all children at get together.

Give each child a skewer and have him or her put the fruit on, one by one. Any pattern is fine and this is the fun part for the kids. One of each fruit and then the pound cake, until their skewer is full. Once they are done, you can add whipped cream to each of their kabobs, if you would like, and your fresh and healthy dessert is done. Enjoy!
