A sinus infection is an inflammation of the cavities connected to the nasal passages that are often caused by common colds, allergic reactions, bacteria and fungal infections. While most sinus infections can be treated with good self care, persistent sinusitis can lead to serious infections and other complications. Preventing sinus infections before they start can prevent the pain and discomfort of nasal congestion and the related symptoms.

Healthy lifestyle habits help to build up the immune system and strengthens the body's defenses against all kinds of diseases and conditions, including sinus infections. Healthy lifestyle habits include getting plenty of sleep, drinking plenty of fluids such as juice and water and hot tea and eating a healthy diets with plentiful antioxidants. Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of antioxidants and are the basis for healthy nutrition. Some people may wish to take a multiple vitamin supplement to help support the nutrition plan.

Allergic symptoms can cause nasal congestion and cause the nasal passages to swell. People with allergies can prevent sinus infections by treating their allergies and avoiding the substances that cause allergic symptoms. During seasons when pollens are high the allergic person may wish to start a course of antihistamines to prevent the allergic symptoms from starting. Talk with your doctor about how to best control your allergy symptoms.

A sinus infection can also be a side effect of a cold or flu, because the mucus building and blocks the nasal passages. Prevention of colds and flu can also prevent sinus infections. Practice good hygiene by washing your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before cooking or eating meals. Avoid people who have colds and flu as the conditions are highly contagious and can easily spread to you subsequently to your family.

Air that is overly dry air, especially in houses with forced air heat, can contribute to sinus problems. A humidifier can add moisture to the house, which may help to prevent sinusitis. The humidifier should be cleaned regularly to keep it clear of mold.

Keep the sinuses clear to prevent buildup on mucus. Hot steam can promote drainage and help to keep the sinuses clear. If music is building up, you can flush the sinuses with a nasal saline solution or by using a neti pot to flush the sinuses.

Practice good hygiene and build the immune system to prevent sinus infections. If you start getting a cold of flu, get plenty of rest to prevent the condition from getting worse. Prevent the discomfort of sinus infection by using good health habits.
