Healthy Halloween Recipes for Trick or Treaters
5 Easy, Fun, and Healthy Treats that Won't Make Kids Scream in Horror
Make a Trick-or-Treat Trail Mix. For this recipe you will need the following: Honey Nut Cheerios, Nuts (peanuts, sunflower seeds, cashews, etc.), Yogurt covered raisins, Candy corn or Halloween M&Ms, and Pretzel sticks.
Mix all ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Scoop about one cup of mix into Halloween-themed snack bags and tie off with an orange or black ribbon. Enjoy! Serves about 24.
Try ooey, gooey, spooky popcorn balls. For this recipe, make popcorn on the stove -- it is surprisingly easy and fun (and, shh, it is also much healthier since it contains less fat and preservatives than its microwaved counterparts). Also, if you have a see-through glass lid, the kiddies will love watching as the kernels pop!
Your shopping list for this recipe: vegetable oil, 1/4 cup, popcorn kernels, 3/4 cup light corn syrup, 1/4 cup margarine, 2 teaspoons cold water, 2 5/8 cups confectioners' sugar, 1 cup marshmallows, orange food coloring, mini chocolate chips, cellophane snack bags, and black or orange ribbon. To make the ooey, gooey, spooky popcorn balls first make the popcorn by pouring the vegetable oil into the pot. Pour enough popcorn kernels to cover the bottom of the pot in a single layer. Heat over medium high heat. Cover and shake gently. Continue until the popping comes to a stop. Once cooled, remove all of the kernels that did not pop (you don't want your tiny goblins to lose a tooth!). Next, combine the corn syrup, margarine, cold water, confectioners' sugar and marshmallows in a saucepan over medium high heat. Stir until the mixture comes to a boil. Add enough food coloring until you achieve the desired color. Carefully combine the gooey mixture with the popcorn, making sure each kernel is coated. Finally, work quickly to shape the coated popcorn into balls before it cools. Roll the ball in the chocolate chips. Once cooled, wrap each ball in a Halloween-themed snack bag and tie with an orange or black ribbon. Enjoy!
Witches' hands are always a fun treat for kids. You will need homemade popcorn (see recipe above), candy corn, and plastic goves purchased from a beauty supply store. Make the popcorn following the above recipe. Remember to remove all of the unpopped kernels! Place a candy corn in each finger of the glove, making sure the pointy side is pointing up if the fingers were facing toward the sky. Fill each glove with popcorn. You can tie the glove off with an orange or black ribbon. For a variation on the popcorn, pour the popcorn in a large baking sheet in a single layer. Spray with butter-flavored cooking spray and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar or cocoa mix. Toss and enjoy!
