Fruit could be used as a treat to hand out but make sure the fruit is unsliced and still in natures own wrapper like bananas, oranges or even apples. These can all be put in a child's trick-or-treat bag or pail without too much worry it's going to be damaged by the time it gets to their home. A company called Crunch Pak sells sliced apples in 2 ounce packages, which is approximately 3 to 5 slices per pack. You can buy them in packs of 64, and they are available in tart or sweet. This brand is available nationwide at many chain stores including: Albertsons, Costco, Kroger, and many others.
Another good treat option are the small individual boxes of breakfast cereal that can be purchased from any major grocery store or membership market , like Costco. Just be sure you're handy out a healthy cereal and not one covered in tons of sugar.
Peanuts in the shell can make a good treat, but you'll want to have a back-up treat for children who have allergies to peanuts. If you like the peanut idea, you could also purchase snack size bags of Ritz Bits, and give these out instead of a sugary snack.
Drinks can make good treats, too. Capri snack drinks that come in individual pouches. Capri Sun snack drinks come in a lower sugar variety. The lower sugar variety has 25% less calories than regular Capri Sun. Another option would be Crystal Light "to go." These are the small packets of powered drink mix that can be added to a 16 bottle of water. Kids can enjoy this mix the next time they're drinking either a big glass of water or a bottle of water.
If you still want to feel like you're giving kids "candy treats" then give them sugarless gum. There are so many flavors and varieties to choose from nowadays that there's no reason for kids to feel deprived. Some major brands of sugarless gum include: Trident, Dentyne, Bubble Yum (sugarless version), just to name a few.
The above ideas should point you in the right direction to providing some healthy or at least healthier Halloween treats for all the little "trick or treat" goblins that will be ringing your doorbell in the near future.
