Healthy Snacks: Healthy Snack Recipes, List of Healthy Snacks and Fun Snacks for Kids

T. H. Pankey
It wasn't until the 1980s health craze and the accompanying commercialization of healthy snacks that all things health-related really started coming into its own. Today, when you think about how misguided both the American consumer and American food manufacturers have been over several decades now, it's no small wonder the grazing habits and choice of refreshments of a great portion of the American herd of people are moving back toward the greener pastures of unequivocal, healthy snacks and collations and away from the status quo of unhealthy food manufacturing and less-than-healthy snack consumption. Whether a particular food manufacturer knowingly or unknowingly wasn't serving up bites good for you all the while is beside the point, now. Healthy, nutritious, snack foods for kids and adults increasingly becoming a part of people's everyday diet is a good thing, no matter how you slice it. Included for you in the following article is a short list of healthy snacks in the form of healthy snack recipes that are both fun snacks for kids and healthy, nutritious snack foods for everyone.

Healthy Snacks: Healthy Snack Recipes

Recipes, including snack recipes, abound on the Internet, let alone printed published cookbooks, hand me down directions for making something, and quickly scrawled instructions on various pieces of paper that you've tucked everywhere hither and thither. Following are more healthy snack recipes to add to your collection:

DaDa's Sweet Cheesy Trail Mix

Healthy Snack Recipe Ingredients:

• two cups Late July Real Organic Bite Size Mild Cheddar Cheese Crackers

• ½ lb. Organic Valley Extra Sharp Vermont Cheddar Cheese

• one pound Bare Fruit Organic Dried Granny Smith Apples

• one cup Apricotking (Hollister-Chandler) Organic Walnut Halves and Pieces

• two tbsp Wegmans Organic Honey

• two tbsp Domino Organic Sugar

• one Eggland's Best Organic Egg white

• one tsp Isbre or purified water

Healthy Snack Recipe Preparation:

In a mixing bowl, with an electric hand-held mixer (an upright blender or whisk by hand is fine, too), beat the egg white and water into a foam. Stir ½ cup walnuts into the foamy mixture until all walnuts are covered with foam on all sides. Gently remove foamed walnuts into a separate mixing bowl, leaving extra foam in original bowl, and sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over walnuts. Toss or gently stir walnuts so they get covered on all sides.

In another small mixing bowl combine remaining ½ cup walnuts with honey, stirring and folding well so that the walnuts are coated on all sides.

Spread walnuts out into a single layer on a very lightly oiled (buttered, even) baking sheet. Bake at low temperature, 200°-225° for about one hour, moving the walnuts around two or three times while baking. Let walnuts cool after baking.

While walnuts are baking dice cheddar cheese into ½ inch cubes. Combine and gently mix cheddar cheese crackers, cheddar cheese cubes and apples. First add sugared walnuts and gently mix again. Now slowly add honey-baked walnuts as you stir the mix. This is so the sticky walnuts will stick throughout the trail mix. Makes about six servings or an afternoon snack for a half dozen hungry young kids. Enjoy!

Note: If you don't want to pay for already dried Granny Smith apples when making this healthy snack recipe, you can dry our own using your oven at about 150º-175º for about 10 to twenty hours (overnight) with the relatively thin slices of allspice-seasoned apples spread out on cake racks or cookie sheets (you'll have to flip them every so often on a cookie sheet) until they're at least the consistency of a raisin (if you want to store them beyond immediate use after drying them), preferably to a crispier consistency than the somewhat softer raisin texture.

Also, you can substitute pecans for walnuts in this healthy snack recipe. Just the same, this is a healthy nutritious snack food for adults, as well as a fun healthy kids snack.

Healthy Snacks: Short List of Fun Snacks for Kids (Baked French Fries)

No list of fun snacks for kids would be in good order if French fries weren't at or near the top. "Whoa! French fries aren't healthy," you say. They're not if they're prepared in such a way so as to be unhealthy. Before food processors get a hold of them, taters are rather nutritious from the ground: a goodly amount of potassium, or about 18% DV, is in an average sized organic potato; also, lots of Vitamin C is in each one, about 45% DV; and a number of other vitamins and minerals can be had by eating organic potatoes.

By hand or gadget, just cut the whole organic potato into French fry sized shapes, put a very light coat of good oil on them, bake them until crispy golden brown, serve hot with a couple of shakes of salt, and voila! you have a fun and healthy snack for kids. Get your small fry or toddler aged and/or older kiddies to play kitchen or chef with you and suddenly everyone is merrily functioning together.

Healthy Snacks: Short List of Fun Snacks for Kids (Homemade Pizza)

Homemade pizzas are creative, healthy homemade snacks for kids that come in high on any list of fun snacks for children, too. What's great about making it yourself, with or without little helpers, is you control what goes on it, as in how healthy it can be. What's more with pizza, creative snack recipes for kids can run the gamut of healthy ingredients. The less than good for you plain ole' pepperoni and processed cheese things you get from most pizza delivery places or the grocery store will soon melt away in comparison to how creative and great tasting the healthy popular snacks you and your kids can make right in your own kitchen. More fun to be had with the preschoolers is when finished baking, cut this fun healthy kids snack into whatever shapes they imagine. Use fun shaped cookie cutters even.

Healthy Snacks: Healthy Snack Recipes, List of Healthy Snacks and Fun Snacks for Kids (Conclusion)

If you're not eating as such already, healthy snacks are within reach right in your own kitchen. Make up for yourself a go-to list of healthy snacks whether from a few healthy snack recipes or just plain bites like baby carrots. Take some time to prepare creative snack recipes for kids, especially with their help. Making fun snacks for kids together with your's and your friend's kids is a great way to keep control wrested away from unscrupulous food processors that push unhealthy foods out onto the market. Plus, almost needless to say, you and all of yours will be healthier when you make it a point to eat healthy snacks. Good health to you!
