Healthy Sweets for Valentine's Day

Where to Find Recipes that Are Filled with Love and Good for the Diet

Jan Peterson
It may be hard not to overdo sugar and fat on Valentine's Day, but not impossible. If you are intent on staying committed to eating healthy in spite of this day of love, here are some resources for Valentine's Day treats that will keep blood sugar under control!

Finding healthy recipes today is easy. A quick scan of the internet will turn up pages and pages of diet and medical websites that offer recipes that can help keep you on track. Here are a few of my favorites.

Diabetic Valentines: Prevention.com

Prevention.com is a helpful site for healthy ideas when losing weight or maintaining weight loss. Their website is a good resource for diabetics and those on a reduced sugar eating program. If Valentine's Day just has to include chocolate, check out Prevention's Diabetes-Friendly Chocolate Desserts slide show and try one of these sweet treats:

Low Fat Fudge Brownies
Chocolate Raspberry Avalanche Cake
Double Chocolate Soufflé
Brownie Bran Cookies

Keep Blood Sugar Low with Diabetic-recipes.com

Diabetic-Recipes.com has over 800 recipes that are "diabetic and heart healthy". The site also has advice for exercise, cooking tips and diabetic lifestyle news center worth keeping up with. There are scads of desserts that your Valentine can enjoy, guilt-free! Carrot Cake at 103 calories a piece anyone?

Eating Healthy with Flaxseed This Valentine's Day

According to the Golden Valley Flax website, incorporating flax seed into our diets, "is associated with a reduction in total cholesterol, including the LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides." Their website lists "Health Benefits of Flax Seed", claiming studies have shown that flax seed can help fight diabetes, heart disease, cancer and constipation; reduce inflammation, relieve menstrual symptoms, boost the immune system, and help depression.

Their recipe section provides ways to add flax seed to muffins, banana bread and even has a recipe for Ms. Field's Chocolate chip/flax cookies!

Valentine's Day Recipes at Allrecipes.com

Allrecipes.com is a good website for recipes in general, and it is a helpful site for dieters following any diet program. Their healthy cooking tab takes you to a plethora of healthy choices that include high fiber options, glycemic lowering recipes, cholesterol control recipes, low fat, and light substitutions. Head to their "Healthy Collection" or Low-Fat Dessert section for delicious recipe selections for all meals! Set up a recipe box and start creating a shopping list right on their site! If you like to blog, their community section has a recipe request section that works similar to a blog, wherein ideas are discussed and shared.

Valentines Recipes at Caloriecount.com

The Calorie Count website is one of my favorite websites for helping me stay on track with my eating plan. I track my food intake and exercise daily, store my recipes and look up calorie and nutrient content of foods I eat here.

The Calorie Count website is a unique resource for recipes in that everyone involved in this online community enters their recipes, so it offers a wide selection of personal favorites. You'll find recipes such as Pumpkin Brownies, Slow-cooker Fudge Pudding Cake, or Low Fat Zucchinni Bread complete with the nutrient breakdown.

Staying on track this Valentine's Day may not seem as hard as you thought after you check out these websites. Make this February 14th, a day for feeling the love, not stuffing your gut!
