Healthy Ways to Sweeten Oatmeal

Jill Lane
First, I only use stove cooked oatmeal. The instant (that is ready after being mixed with boiling water) has a slightly bitter weaker flavor. The cooked kind takes about five minutes on the stove top, and it well worth the minimal effort. I have eaten oats since childhood, and here are my favorite sugar-free add-ins.

- Add mixed dried berries, Not only would you be getting grains, but fruits (that usually come with antioxidants). The berries will soften when around the warn cereal. My favorite is dried cherries, but experiment until you find a taste you like.

- All fruit spreads (Smucker's or Polaner). Just a half a tablespoon to one cup cooked oatmeal can change flavor, color and texture.

- Pumpkin pie spice makes oats a comfort food for my kids. For the longest time, my oldest thought the spice mix was only for oatmeal. This smells warm and welcoming and just a teaspoon adds a much needed boost to breakfast.

- A tablespoon of peanut butter ads heart healthy proteins and a nice nutty flavor. This is especially yummy when mixed with a bit of an all-fruit spread.

- Almond slivers or another diced nut adds crunch. I have only tried almonds, as that is all i keep on hand, but cashews or even walnuts would be tasty and healthy.

- A minimal amount of honey (make sure it is organic!) adds a slight sweet. I like to pair this with almonds or some golden raisins.

- An extract such as vanilla won't work alone, but adds something to the berries or peanut butter.

- Dice up a small apple and microwave it for a few minutes. Stir it in your oats with a bit of cinnamon. This is a "snow day" favorite.

- Fresh blueberries or strawberries are a favorite of my youngest. The cool berry and warm oats make a very tasty mix.

Don't be afraid to try something not on the list. Oatmeal is a very forgiving food. Make the recommended single serving (directions on container) That way you only have a bit, in case it isn't to your liking. Combine my suggestions, or make some of your own. Relax and enjoy breakfast again.
