HealthyWage: Earning Money to Lose Weight

Katie D
Want an extra incentive to lose weight? HealthyWage might be just what you're looking for. HealthyWage pays you to lose weight. Sound too good to be true? It's not. But it's not as easy as it sounds, either.

The premise behind HealthyWage is that you'll lose weight if there are financial incentives for two reasons: "(1) you don't want to lose your money; and, (2) you're excited about earning a larger reward."

While sponsors are the source of the 'free' version of HealthyWage, there is an option for users to earn even more money on their weight loss. The SuperSize option requires the user either pay $150 or $300 (depending on how much they want to earn) in order to get a higher payout at the end. There is a $150 option that pays a user $400 if they lose their weight, and a $300 option that pays out $1000 if the weight loss goal is reached. According to HealthyWage, "All "bets" are deposited and held in a special trust account at Citibank, where no one has access to the user's money until the user's completion of a given challenge. Funds are completely locked in this trust account for the full duration of any user's challenge duration and cannot be withdrawn by either the user, or by us." Keep in mind that you have to reach your goal weight in the time allotted in order to get any money back.

There are a few requirements: According to HealthyWage, in order to qualify for their program, "You must start with a BMI of at least 30, and you must have a BMI of less than 25 on your Victory Date (which is exactly one year after your Start Date). At the start of your challenge you will be required to print a special verification form and take it to get "weighed-in" at either your doctor or a participating health club - this is how we keep everyone honest. From then on you simply must weigh-in each week of the year on the HealthyWage website (using your own scale is fine. At the end of the challenge, you'll be required to go back to your doctor, or the health club and verify your ending weight."

The weekly weigh-ins do not require a visit to your doctor. You just weigh in on your home scale and record your weight on the HealthyWage website.

There are no rules regarding weight loss aids or prescriptions from your doctor. You can use whatever means necessary to lose your weight. HealthyWage only cares about your starting weight and ending weight.

Besides the classic BMI challenge and SuperSizer challenge, there is also the Top Motivator challenge. This challenge entails friends on the website listing you as the top motivator and losing weight themselves.
