Heart Healthy Diet Tips

Eating heart healthy food is important for people of all ages. There are many healthy diets that are easily maintained to help you improve your health and lower the risk for heart disease.

Not all doctors agree on the total numbers for good and bad cholesterol levels that are the healthiest. There are other health factors that may determine what is the healthiest cholesterol level for an individual. The most important thing to remember is that too much fat in your diet cannot be healthy. Although it is difficult to avoid high fat meals all the time, there are few simple ways to prepare meals to lower the risk of developing heart disease.

A diet high in saturated fats and high sodium levels may raise your cholesterol and put you at a higher risk for heart disease.

Choose healthy fats and oils, using monounsaturated fats to protect your heart. Sauté or stir-fry with olive oil which is a healthy fat and is an excellent choice to use for cooking and salad dressings. Use olive oil or coconut oil, to bake fish or skinless chicken, add some lemon and a bit of herbs for a delicious heart healthy meal.

To cut back on fatty meat dishes try seafood, poultry and nuts for protein sources in your diet. You should have fish at least twice a week to assure you are getting the much needed omega-3 essential fatty acids. Salmon, herring, and sardines are all excellent sources. Some varieties of trout are also relatively high omega-3 fatty acids.

Fish oil capsules are available at retail stores or health stores for those that cannot consume fish.

Increasing the fiber in your diet will also help to control your cholesterol. The fiber in whole grain cereal, oat meal, whole grain pasta, brown rice, and whole grain breads are all good sources.

Fruits and vegetables are high fiber sources and should be the main part of every meal. Steam vegetables to retain more vitamins and select fresh fruit when in season. Adding flax seed, wheat germ, millet and barley to recipes is an additional method of increasing fiber in your diet.

Eating healthy must become a lifestyle change for those that desire to maintain a healthy heart.
