Heart Healthy Tips and Advice from "Dr. Oz" and My Healthy Life

Shirley Norling
I get emails galore, as I'm sure many of you do, on ways to stay healthy and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Many of them I delete without reading anything but the headline. There was one newsletter that came through my mailbox the other day that caught my eye and was definitely worth the time it took to read. The topics discussed were ways to keep your heart healthy and tips on doing it from the one and only Dr. Oz, made famous on the Oprah Winfrey Show. I would like to share some of Dr. Oz's tips and things he advices on keeping yourself heart healthy.

1. Get rid of belly fat: Dr. Oz advices us to focus on losing weight so that the belly fat will disappear.

2. Take a deep breath and repeat: Doing this will suck the nitric oxide into your lungs helping blood vessels and lungs work more efficiently.

3. Listen to guided imagery CDs: Dr. Oz says this will calm patients and also help in the healing of the body.

4. Keep your health numbers low: Blood pressure, blood sugar, and your LDL are all numbers that should be on the low side in order to help maintain the healthiest bodies.

5. Stop drinking pop: Soda pop has no nutritional value, but is loaded with a lot of calories we don't really need.

6. Rev up your exercise program: Include vigorous exercise at least twice a week into your regime, if your body is able to take it. Check with your own doctor on ways to do this if you have any medical concerns.

7. Use aromatherapy & music therapy: Senses of smell and hearing can help you relax.

Heart health, room to room in that My Healthy Life newsletter included the following tips and advice that I found quite interesting and would like to share:

1. Entryway: Add tennis shoes. Keep a pair of sneakers by your front door so they're always handy for exercising.

2. Living Room: Ban snacking. Keep all those snacks and munchies in your kitchen, not the living room.

3. Kitchen: Line your shelves with heart healthy cookbooks.

4. Bathroom: Dust off that scale and use it everyday. It'll help you stay on track by keeping track of your weight. I need to get to the store and purchase some batteries for mine. Right now it's not doing me one bit of good.

5. Bedroom: Unmake the bed. Those taking daytime naps were 30% less likely to die of a heart attack according to a recent Harvard research.

6. Staircase: Climb a flight of stairs to gauge your fitness level. If your heart rate goes up by more then 10 beats or you feel short of breath, you're probably out of shape.

A lot of these tips and ideas on keeping ones heart healthy are fairly easy to accomplish for the most part, I feel. We all just need to be reminded once in awhile the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle to keep ourselves fit. For more detailed information from Dr. Oz and My Healthy Life go to the Better Homes and Gardens website and check out their section on health. They have the above information, as well as a lot more on keeping yourself heart healthy.
