Heart for a Hero Allows Anyone to Pay Tribute to Our Soldiers

Julie Richards
Laura Owens was proud. Her son was being deployed to the Middle East. That pride was riddled with concerns for her son, Matt's, safety. Laura chose to do something in honor of her son. In taking action, she also was honoring all the other service members who were away from their families, or those who were to never return.

Owens designed a locket that represented the hero in your heart. The web site describes the locket as "created of precious 18K gold bonded to sterling silver, providing the elegance of gold, at a fraction of the price of gold (Nickel-free), with beautiful simulated diamonds on the front side. It is also reversible, with a solid finish on the back. The beautiful adjustable chain has a simulated diamond at the end of the chain which can be worn as a 16" necklace, up to a 20" length necklace."

Ms. Owens says the "heart within a heart" design symbolizes that a hero is in your heart. The locket can be used to store a photo of your hero, or other mementos. You also have the option of buying a locket for a service person. Military personnel will receive a gift card along with a special USO care package. The soldier can then choose who they want the locket mailed to.

The USO has partnered with Heart For A Hero and receives a portion of the proceeds of each necklace sale. The USO has provided military personnel with entertainment, moral support and other recreational activities for years. In May, the USO had the honor of presenting to First Lady Laura Bush, one of the first Heart For A Hero locket.

Visiting the website shows Senator Bob Dole as endorsing this project. His endorsement reads, "All of those who serve our country are heroes. Heart for a Hero is an opportunity for Americans to celebrate and honor America's heroes and to help the USO."

United Service Organizations (USO) has done so much in the 66 years of operation. They support the military as well as their families. The USO offers free internet and e-mail services, as well as housing assistance, welcome centers, and libraries. They also offer a family crisis counselling service.
