Susan Boyle, the 47 year old choir singer from Scotland captured hearts and hope worldwide when she first appeared on Britain's Got Talent. Even the judges feared the worst when the dowdy middle aged woman stepped onto the stage, visibly wincing at her appearance. Eyes popped and jaws dropped when she began to sing the now famous song "I dream a dream". After the initial performance and sailing through the audition, the clip of Boyle became a most watched video on You-Tube.
For her appearance in the semi-finals, she seemed to have a little trouble starting up the song "Memories" but quickly reached her stride and again wowed the audience. Naturally, she was the favorite worldwide to win the competition.
Unfortunately, all the media attention and constant hounding most likely had a part in unraveling her simple life. She got a slight makeover and the scrutiny continued. She has been called such unfortunate things as "hairy angel" and has received a lot of criticism for having her hair done, getting new clothes and having her eyebrows waxed. It has been reported that even Simon Cowell, one of the most critical judges of the show was angry at Susan for visiting a beauty shop. Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden have been on American morning television shows appearing to take up for her.
Several days before the finale, both Piers and Amanda appeared on CBS's The Early Show with an update on Susan's mental status as she had apparently had several emotional outbursts during the week. Ms. Boyle reportedly became so upset at one point that she packed her bags and threatened to leave the show.
Sadly and shockingly, she did not win Britain's Got Talent when it aired on May 30. She was runner up to a British dance troupe "Diversity" which will receive the apparently enormous pleasure of performing in front of the queen (along with the cash prize).
Even though she did not win, most likely we have not heard the last of Susan Boyle. Paul Potts, the amazing opera singing winner of the 2007 show appeared on CBS's The Early Show in May and confirmed that talks for a duet may have been in the works at that time. I would bet that the queen would rather see Susan Boyle but that is just a guess.
