Heartburn: How to Stop it Before it Takes You Down

Lea Barton
Is there a burning sensation in the throat sometimes that requires medication to alleviate the pain? Many people suffer from heartburn and there are many medical remedies for this problem, but there are also ways to stop heartburn before it occurs. Although most people don't think about acid issues before they occur, it is an unnecessary pain that can be prevented.

Some of the common causes of acid pain are easily avoided once they are known.

• Don't eat right before lying down or before exercise. When people lay down it is easier for fluids from the stomach to get out and into the throat because they are in a horizontal position.

• When exercising there is exertion on the muscles and you have been eating recently then that can cause heartburn.

• Also try to avoid overeating. When people eat too much they add a lot of pressure to the stomach and when it expands it is harder for the muscle that connects the stomach and esophagus to stay closed.

• One way to avoid heartburn is to watch what you eat. Food triggers stomach acid activity and the types of food that cause heartburn can differ from person to person. Different foods may cause heartburn for one person than for other people, so don't just listen to friends and relatives who tell you what not to eat. Figure it out for yourself what foods can and can't be eaten.

• Keep a record of every time heartburn occurs and what was eaten when it occurred. Soon a pattern will emerge of what foods or combination of foods cause the heartburn and those particular foods can then be avoided.

• Are you a fast eater? Dieticians will tell people that they need to chew their food well before they swallow, and this can help them avoid heartburn. The saliva in the mouth mixes with the food being chewed and helps break it down. The more the food is broken down when it is swallowed, the less work the stomach has to do to finish breaking it down. When your stomach produces less acid then is a less likely chance to have heartburn symptoms. Slow down and take your time when eating. Allow yourself to chew food adequately before swallowing.

All of these suggestions can help you avoid heartburn. There is no need to spend your money on medications that cover up the burn for a short time when you can just avoid the burning sensation in the first place.
