For each Heart-Man Decoration you'll need...
~ 3 inch by 3 inch square of red of pink construction paper
~ 2 inch by 4 inch piece of pink or white construction paper
~ Glue
~ Small scraps of black construction paper
~ Small scraps of white construction paper
~ Scissors
~ Tape
The first step is to cut a heart out of the red or pink 3 inch square. It's easiest to fold the square in half and cut out half a heart through both layers and unfold it for a perfectly symetrical heart. (Make sure the heart's center line is on the fold!) Once you have one perfect heart, you can use it to trace and cut out more.
Next, cut the two inch by four inch piece of construction paper into four strips. Cut long-ways so you end up with 4 strips that are each 1/2 inch by four inches. Fold each of these strips accordian-style, (like a fan), with the folds no more than a third of an inch apart. From the scraps of the color you have the heart from, cut two little mitten-hands. Glue them to the ends of two of the accordian strips. Glue the opposite ends of those two strips to the Heart-Man's "shoulders".
From the white and black construction paper, make eyes. A white circle (trace around a button to make a perfect circle), with a smaller black circle glued to it makes each eye. Experiment with the placement of the black circles to change your Heart-Man's expression, then glue both eyes in place.
From scraaps of black paper, cut out two little boots and glue them to the remaining acccordian strips. Then glue the opposite ends of those strips near the bottom of your Heart-Man for his legs. Make your Heart-Man a smiling mouth from the white of pink scraps and glue it in place.
Now your basic Heart-Man is ready to be personalized! Try some of these ideas... Make hair by gluing on thin strips of paper; (make it curly by rolling around a pencil), or with bits of string or yarn...Make him a cheerful hat...Add rosy cheeks with a marker...Make a tiny sign for his hand with a holiday message...Turn him into a "her";give her earrings or a little skirt. Get creative and have fun with them. Then just add a bit of tape to the back, and attach your Valentine's Day Heart-Man (or Heart-Woman!) to the edge of your computer monitor to cheer up everyone who sees him/her this Valentine's Day!
Happy Valentine's Day!
