Heaven

Written January 19, 2006 for My Son

Heather B.

There's a saying
that Heaven can wait.

It can't.

You see,
Heaven is here with me right now
and I can guarantee you
it's not going to wait.

The waving arms,
and the scrunched up face
beckon to me,
impatient.

I say "One moment, please"
and I'm sure it's heard
...but not heeded.

The tears keep flowing,
the arms keep flailing,
the cries ring out,
Heaven will not wait.

"Now" is the only word spoken
though in another language
For the words of children
are not sounds carefully uttered
but tones and movements
purposefully formed.

Each word echoes in my mind
slices through my heart
Heaven cannot, will not wait
and I cannot, will not let it.

My arms reach out to embrace
and quickly retract
pulling the precious cargo to my chest
coddling it to my bosom.

I'm holding Heaven in my arms
Nothing's ever felt so good
I am at peace, I am complete
How can I ever let go?

I tell you Heaven cannot wait
It is too impatient, too ready
and I cannot let it wait
for I am nothing without it

Now that I have it
I cannot let go
And if I ever must...
I cannot wait
I will not wait
to get to Heaven again.
