Heavenly Sandwiches and Smoothies Restaurant Review

One of my favorite restaurants in New Smyrna Beach is Heavenly Sandwiches and Smoothies. Not only do they offer fabulous food, decadent coffee drinks, and delicious healthy fruit smoothies; they also serve up a platter of good old fashioned hospitality.

Heavenly Sandwiches and Smoothies is located in the Historic District, near the intersection of Flagler and Peninsula Avenues. The bright pink building with the giant ice cream cone makes it easy to spot this distinctive dining spot.

As soon as you enter, you're greeted by a friendly staff member. Various aromas fill the air; all of which make your salivary glands go into overdrive. To the left is an entire wall lined with bright yellow menu boards. Selections include everything from sandwiches and salads to wheatgrass shots and power smoothies.

More often than not, there is a line at Heavenly Sandwiches and Smoothies. This is because the food is so good that people flock from all around to eat there. Generally, the wait is not very long and gives you time to peruse the menu. Believe me when I say you will need time to decide; especially if it's your first visit.

Heavenly Sandwiches and Smoothies serves breakfast between 8 and 11 a.m. I recommend the Amazon Cherry Breakfast Bowl. It's a combination of Amazon cherries, banana, cherry juice, and frozen yogurt, topped off with nut granola and banana slices. Or, if you prefer a more traditional breakfast, Heavenly's offers egg, sausage and cheese biscuits; breakfast burritos; and fresh bagels and muffins made from scratch each morning.

If you like smoothies, you'll love the selection available at Heavenly Sandwiches and Smoothies. They have energy smoothies, coffee and chai smoothies, fruit smoothies, and power smoothies. If you purchase a smoothie from their selected menu before 11 a.m., you receive a one dollar discount.

Heavenly Sandwiches and Smoothies coffee concoctions are to die for. My two favorites are the Caramel Coffee Bean and Mocha Coffee Bean. Oh la la! They are made with low-fat yogurt, so you can indulge guilt-free!

You'll also find a nice selection of health tonics at Heavenly Sandwiches and Smoothies. You can get a shot of wheatgrass, although I'm not sure how anyone can drink that stuff. I tried it once and it definitely did not suit my palate.

My favorite health tonic is the Carrot, Celery, Garlic and Ginger Combo. The carrot and celery are in good balance with the heat from the garlic and ginger. Once it hits your stomach, you feel as if your spine is straightening and your body begins to tingle a bit. Then you get this burst of energy and are ready to face the day full throttle. It's good stuff!

The salads at Heavenly Sandwiches and Smoothies are exceptional. They offer five salad selections; all of which include the most incredible multi-grain croutons and homemade dressings I've ever tasted. My favorites are the Gorgonzola Walnut Salad, and the Spinach Salad, which is drizzled with homemade bacon vinaigrette dressing.

Heavenly Sandwiches and Smoothies features five homemade soups and chowders, made fresh on the premises each day. I highly recommend the Caribbean Jerk Chicken and Baked Potato Chowder.

Heavenly Sandwiches and Smoothies offers ten hot sandwiches, including the traditional ham and cheese and the classic BLT. They have an excellent selection of vegetarian sandwiches. My personal favorite is the Portabella Basil Wrap. It includes mozzarella cheese melted over fresh Portabella mushrooms, brown rice, fresh basil, garlic and olive oil, tomato slices, and spinach; then topped with sun-dried tomato vinaigrette.

Looking for something with a bit of a kick? Try Heavenly's burritos and quesadillas. My vote goes to the Beachside Burrito. It's a combination of char-grilled chicken, three kinds of cheeses, brown rice, black beans, grilled red and green peppers, onions, mushrooms, sour cream and salsa. This is a meal for two, so bring a friend or a really big appetite!

Heavenly Sandwiches and Smoothies has received the "BEST" Star of the South Awards for three consecutive years. Once you try their food, you'll understand why.

The next time you're in New Smyrna Beach, stop by Heavenly Sandwiches and Smoothies. Grab a healthy meal and a delicious smoothie or coffee drink, than take a stroll down Flagler Avenue. Visit the shops and boutiques, take a walk on the beach, and enjoy the abundance of water fowl and sea life.
