Hefty Cinch Sak Tall Trash Bags VS. America's Choice Tall Kitchen Elastic Drawstring Bags

Carol Bengle Gilbert
There are two things about kitchen trash bags that can drive a person buggy. The first is the bag sliding into the waste basket during use and needing to be unearthed from under soggy, indeterminate globs of refuse. The second is the bag tearing and spilling that same refuse during or after removal from the waste basket. Rest assured that if your waste basket contains anything gross and hard to clean, from wet coffee grounds to dripping egg shells or mushy, half-eaten dinners, that is precisely what will find its way onto your floor or all over the top of the trash bag. Guaranteed.

Which 13 gallon kitchen trash bag, the Hefty Cinch Sak or the America's Choice Elastic Drawstring Bag, best prevents these mishaps?

Bag Security in the Waste Basket

The Hefty Cinch Sak works like the majority of other trash bags on the market- it is tight at the top and stretches a bit to slide over the rim of the waste basket. Like most of its competitors, the Hefty Cinch Sak is prone to slipping inside the waste basket when trash accumulates and the weight of the trash exerts pressure on the bag.

America's Choice Elastic Drawstring Bags are different. When I first tried to slip one over the rim of my waste basket, I thought, "Oh, no. These don't fit." A bit more investigation revealed that the America's Choice Elastic Drawstring Bags have elastic bands in them that stretch; despite initial appearances, they do stretch enough to fit tightly around the rim of the waste basket. And they stay put.

The America's Choice Elastic Drawstring Bag is the clear winner with respect to keeping the bag secure in the waste basket.

Bag Strength

Which of these bags- the Hefty Cinch Sak or America's Choice Elastic Drawstring Bag - is best at preventing pokey things from poking holes in the bag? Which one resists stress when weighted with trash and avoids tearing during the process of removing it from the waste basket?

The Hefty Cinch Sak is one of, if not the, most solid bag in the 13 gallon kitchen waste basket trash bag market. It does as good a job as any I have seen in resisting tears. It is not perfect by any means, but it is at the top of the heap when compared to its competitors.

Can the America's Choice Elastic Drawstring Bag stand up to this competition? Well, no, not actually. It performs decently, but it is not up to the Hefty Cinch Sak durability standard. It tears when weighted down with trash more often than the Hefty Cinch Sak..

Which Bag to Buy?

With each bag offering a different advantage, which is the best to buy? Go with the America's Choice Elastic Drawstring Bag. It has the unique advantage of not slipping into the waste basket. Think how many times you have been frustrated by this problem. Remember the glop on your hands as you've reached under refuse to retrieve the bag edge and pull it into place? Remember having to clean the inside of your waste basket because goo got all over it instead of remaining in the plastic bag? Ugh.

While not as strong as the Hefty Cinch Sak, America's Choice Elastic Drawstring Bag performs as well as most other 13 gallon trash bags. The tearing problem occurs with all brands of plastic trash bags, even Hefty Cinch Sak though to a lesser extent. And the tearing problem can be averted by not overloading the bag with heavy trash, whereas the slippage problem is a more intractable one.

America's Choice Elastic Drawstring Bags are typically less expensive than Hefty Cinch Sak bags, another factor in awarding them the top trash bag title.

I expected Hefty to be superior in all ways--so this was surprising. I'll have to try the America's Choice myself--

I didn't like the durability of the America's Choice brand and I definitely overload my bags so my solution was to find the perfect sized trash can in order to get the bag to sit right without falling into it. Now I use the most durable bag and it never slips in the trash can.

Yours are the first product comparison reviews I've read. You do a good job on them. I've never tried the America's Choice brand, but I may have to now.

Very good review! I have tried America's Choice and have never been impressed. They rip and tear to easy and then there was the box with the seam down one side not closed. Hefty is what I stick with.

We only use Hefty, but I enjoyed the review. Maybe I will have to take a second look !

I personally love Hefty's The Gripper because I don't have to worry about the bag falling into the trash can.
