Heidi Montag: the Next Michael Jackson? Hardly

John Neeb
In an earlier article (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2102929/instant_celebrity.html?cat=9), I railed against pseudo-celebrities who use their fifteen minutes of fame as a springboard for undeserved opportunities (for example, performing at the Miss Universe pagent). If an artist takes the time and effort to hone a craft over years of practicing, performing at low-paying gigs, and building a career, I can fully respect that. I may not care much for the music or movies they produce, but I can respect the process. Artists who take that route have proven themselves.

Heidi Montag is famous mainly for being famous. She was not an "actress" with her gig on MTV's "The Hills." The cameras followed her in her daily life. Sure, some situations may have been set up to create more drama, but even if one wants to look at it that way, Heidi was "playing" Heidi Montag. Cameras can follow anyone, but it doesn't make one a talented actor. Besides being famous, though, Heidi Montag (and her husband, Spencer Pratt) might just be delusional.

Spencer Pratt made the ridiculous claim on MTV that Heidi Montag is the "new, modern day, 2010 Michael Jackson." Speidi, as the couple is sometimes referred, are not famous on account of any collective intelligence, but Spencer's statement is simply absurd.

Michael Jackson sold hundreds of millions of albums. Read that again. Hundreds of millions. Heidi Montag has sold, to date, zero albums. Her self-titled disc is scheduled for a late September release, but don't expect it to break Michael Jackson's "Thriller" record (over 110 million copies sold worldwide).

Pratt went further with his ludicrous claims, saying that Heidi will be "way bigger" than Michael Jackson.

Heidi Montag's claims were a tad more grounded, saying that she aspired to be like Britney Spears, career-wise. Of course, her costume for the Miss Universe pageant performance was practically a complete Britney Spears rip-off, a fact not lost on many critics. But Heidi believes her career will be similar to Spears' and she is "ready to be the next pop galaxy."

In all likelihood, Spencer was trying to drum up some attention for his wife's musical endeavors, rather than actually intending to mean Heidi Montag will be bigger than Michael Jackson. And maybe Heidi was intending to pay homage to Britney Spears with her Miss Universe pageant outfit choice. Speidi may have said these comments with tongue planted firmly in cheek, but we will have to see what follows.

As a thought, perhaps the couple would be better suited to actually putting time in, booking smaller gigs to start with, and working her way up to stardom, instead of relying on pseudo-celebrity status.
