Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt -- How to Succeed in the Headlines Without Really Trying

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are back in the headlines, as reported by The Vancouver Sun. Now the blonde duo claims they're bankrupt after blowing $10 million.

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, authors of How To Be Famous: Our Guide to Looking the Part, Playing the Press and Becoming a Tabloid Fixture, know how to do it well. The blonde duo has managed to stay at the top of the headlines without any real accomplishments since The Hills.

June 1, 2010 - Besides all her plastic surgeries, Heidi Montag hit the news for allegedly splitting from Spencer Pratt. Heidi claimed she split from Pratt because, "I had to get away from the lies my family and supposed friends are saying about me."

June 3, 2010 - Only a couple of days after her big announcement, Us Magazine reports that Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt fabricated their split. With The Hills on its way out, Us Magazine alleged that the couple made up the split to stay famous after The Hills wrap up.

August 19, 2010 - After a few months of staying out of the headlines, Speidi resurfaces, with a bang. This time around, Spencer Pratt reports that he has a tell-all that he wants to promote. Said Pratt, "My last book, How to be Famous, didn't make The New York Times best-seller list because it was in the self-help section. This one is going to be totally different. I'm not holding anything back."

Said Montag, who was back to implying that she and Pratt were split, "This is exactly why I left him. Right now I'm looking into my legal options to stop it."

No word of the tell-all since. Did Heidi stop it or was there never a tell-all to begin with?

August 20, 2010 - A day after the big tell-all announcement, Pratt declared he had a sex tape of Montag that he was prepared to sell to Vivid Entertainment, confirmed by Vivid's co-chairman, Steven Hirsch, "I just got off the phone with Spencer Pratt about a sex tape with Heidi Montag."

September 6, 2010 - Next month, as if the supposed sex tape of Montag was not enough, the Pratt was back, bragging about a Karissa Shannon sex tape. The Playboy Playmate claimed that Pratt stole the tape of her with her boyfriend Sam Jones. Said Pratt on his Twitter, "Would love to give Karissa Shannon her sex tape back, but it's currently serving as the keystone of my awesome sex tape fort." Pratt also bragged about a tape featuring Montag/Shannon girl on girl action.

September 9, 2010 - A few days after the sex-tape announcements concluded, Pratt got back in the headlines with a public apology to Montag. "I horribly embarrassed the one person that meant the world to me. For my outrageous and infantile behavior, I offer Heidi my most sincere apologies." During this time, word was out that Montag and Pratt were divorcing. However, word was also out that the two were really just fine and together in Costa Rica.

September 23, 2010 - News of Speidi's financial troubles came in September. By then most concluded that the pair had faked their split for publicity. "You're right! It was all a publicity stunt! A hoax! I'm talking, of course, about Joaquin Phoenix's new movie," Spencer tweeted. After leaving Costa Rica, they were back living in their mom's beach house.

Heidi tweeted, "First few days back in America! I don't think I will ever leave again, at least I am never letting @SpencerPratt pack again!!!! Praise Jesus!"

November 4, 2010 - The pair claim they've spent $10 million, owe close to $2 million in taxes, and are considering filing for bankruptcy. Living in the guesthouse of Pratt's parents, Heidi claims Spencer's parents go to the grocery store for them once a week.

According to Speidi, they thought The Hills were alive with the sound of cash for the next "five to 10 years." In actuality, The Hills lasted a total of about 4 years.

"We don't want sympathy. We did this to ourselves and feel like idiots. But we've grown up and are definitely not as naive anymore," says Pratt.

Fact or Fiction?

We all know the story of the boy who cried wolf. If Speidi is telling the truth about being broke, who believes them? The broke couple recently lived it up at PURE Nightclub at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Pratt wore a costume. Montag didn't.

Other than that, not much happening for Pratt. However, Heidi Montag is now preparing for her new music video and is full of life on her Twitter, "Going to Hustler strip club. Want to pick up some tips for my music video that I am shooting next week."
