Modeled Divorce After Sandra Bullock's Divorce from Jesse James

Former reality television stars Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt admit the entire divorce proceedings that played out in the tabloids and on the Internet this past summer was all a ploy to save Heidi Montag's career and keep the couple out of bankruptcy.

Spencer Pratt spoke exclusively to Life & Style Magazine saying, "The divorce was real - just the idea behind it was different than most people's. Divorcing was the only way to keep Heidi's career going because everyone hated me so much. Look at Sandra Bullock. Her divorce from Jesse James was the best thing to happen to her image."

Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag made their fortune playing characters on the MTV semi-reality show The Hills which ended its four-year run in July. They reportedly made $10 million dollars between both of them in the four years the show was on the air, and now Spencer Pratt admits the couple has nothing left of that fortune.

Pratt and Montag hatched the plan to win a reality TV show deal with a UK company after learning The Hills wouldn't be picked up by MTV for another season. After seeing the sympathy Sandra Bullock received after announcing she was divorcing her husband Jesse James after he admitted to an affair, Pratt thought people would be happy to give sympathy to Montag and open more doors for her.

Pratt admitted the couple made a lot of poor financial decisions in the time they were on television, saying he blames himself for being young, immature and wanting to party and blow the money that was being given to him quickly. He also admitted he never thought about a future after the money ran out. He owns a mansion in California and Costa Rica he admits he can't afford anymore.

Heidi Montag released a press release on Thursday saying she plans to file for bankruptcy in the coming months. Montag also admitted the payoff for lying about the divorce was a new reality show that would air in the United Kingdom.

About two months after announcing their divorce the couple was seen walking together on the beach near their Costa Rican home. Spencer Pratt confirmed after the British television deal fell through the couple reconciled and moved back in together.

Pratt admitted the couple is now worried about their futures since no one will offer them a new project saying, "I can't make regular money because I was playing such an unlikeable character on TV to keep my checks coming. Who wants to hire the jerk from The Hills?"
