Heidi the Puppy

Liza Eckert
The story of Heidi the dog is a very special one. Heidi is a very pretty Husky. She was born in a bathroom one summer.

For 5 months, the puppy lived with her mother in a bathroom, only seeing people when they brought them food. Because of this, Heidi was always scared of humans. Whenever one came near her she would run away and hide behind something.

One day, the people of the house decided they couldn't take care of Heidi anymore, so they took her to an animal shelter. The people working at the shelter loved Heidi but were worried about her because she was so scared all the time.

One day, the vets at the shelter were at Heidi's kennel caring for her, and she escaped! She ran into the woods behind the shelter. People tried to bring her back, but she was so scared she ran away from them to hide.

The animal shelter also had a store, and people would leave old clothes and blankets outside to be sold. Heidi began to steal clothes and blankets to build herself a nest in the woods. For a long time this was the only time anyone would see her.

The vets were very worried about Heidi, so they put out food for her every day, which she was very happy to eat. They also put medicine in her food so she wouldn't get sick.

People visiting the shelter would sometimes see Heidi, but she never came close enough for them to pet her. When people were walking dogs she would say hello to the dog but never let the person get near her.

One day the vets decided Heidi was looking for a friend. They put another dog in a yard and opened the fence. When Heidi ran in to play with the other dog, they closed the gate so she couldn't get away again.

They were able to put a leash on Heidi and take her back into the shelter. She was so scared that she sat at the back of her kennel for weeks and wouldn't come near anyone.

The people at the shelter spent a lot of time trying to make Heidi feel better. They would stand at the door to her kennel and talk to her. Sometimes they would be really nice and bring her treats.

After a few weeks, Heidi began to come out of her shell. She let people pet her and played outside with other dogs. She became a very friendly girl. The time soon came for the shelter to find Heidi a new home. She moved to a different kennel so that people would see her.

Every day people came to the shelter to look at the dogs, but none were right for Heidi. She began to worry that no one would ever want to take her home.

Finally, after a long time, Heidi had her lucky day. A family was at the shelter and they thought she was very pretty. They took her outside to play, and their two children fell in love with Heidi. The who family decided that she was very nice and they wanted to take her home.

Mom and Dad talked to the people who worked at the shelter and told them they wanted to adopt Heidi. The people were very excited for Heidi because this family was very nice. So the family took Heidi home.

Heidi had a wonderful life in her new home. She had a big backyard where she could run around and play. At night she slept under the covers with her mom and dad. Heidi always had plenty of food to eat and toys to play with. She was very happy with her new family for the rest of her life.
