Heisman Trophy 2009 Race Down to Five Finalists

Robert Dougherty
The Heisman Trophy 2009 has been heavily debated all year, for good and bad. Mostly, the 2009 Heisman Trophy race was defined by having no favorites, and no sure nominees. Once Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow slipped up, the award was wide open to almost anyone. Today, the Heisman Trophy 2009 can only be given to one of five finalists, who can now officially book trips to New York.

The five finalists were named on ESPN at 6 p.m. est, and will appear at the Downtown Athletic Club on Saturday night. In such a wide open year, each of the five have a good case to make, so it is still anyone's game.

The first Heisman Trophy 2009 finalist is the likely favorite at the moment. Mark Ingram shot himself into the Heisman conversation by leading Alabama to a perfect season. The running back could be the first Crimson Tide player to ever win the award, and may have clinched it with a big performance against Florida.

His closest competition may be Colt McCoy, who is no stranger to this race. McCoy got himself invited for the second year in a row, after losing to Big 12 rival Sam Bradford last year. However, after nearly costing the Longhorns a national title shot, McCoy's stock may have fallen. Whether it was enough to cost him the Heisman is uncertain.

There couldn't be a Heisman Trophy ceremony without Tim Tebow, who got nominated for the third year in a row. But his hopes of being the second two-time winner in history may have been dashed after last weekend.

The most unlikely Heisman Trophy 2009 nominee is a dominant defensive end. Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh made the biggest last-minute statement by running over Texas on Saturday. The odds are still long that a defensive player can win, but if anyone can, it may be Suh.

Rounding out the field is the only nominee who didn't play this past Saturday. But Stanford's Toby Gerhart may already have a winning resume, as the running back led the Cardinal to their first bowl in eight years. Though Stanford lost four times, Tebow won his Heisman on a three-loss Gator team, so records don't always matter. After Gerhart carried Stanford to a prime time win over Notre Dame, he may be the dark horse candidate.

Although the Heisman Trophy 2009 is awarded for a whole season of work, it seems to really be decided by the final game. By that standard, Ingram, Suh and Gerhart are the favorites, while Tebow and McCoy are underdogs. But McCoy was considered to be the favorite before last weekend, so his body of work may still put him over the top.

Ingram and McCoy will have a more important clash on January 7, for the national championship. But they will meet for another title this Saturday night, along with Tebow, Gerhart and Suh.

At around 9 pm est on Saturday, the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner will be announced on ESPN, after everyone struggled to find a favorite for months. But the Downtown Athletic Club managed to find five possible favorites anyway.

  • suh is best player in country12/8/2009

what is the heisman trophy? its the award for the best player in the country. correct? the best play i the country is mr. suh undoubtedly

  • mac12/8/2009

suh desrves way more credit than any of other candidates he better at least get second. mccoy better not finish before him as well bc clearly suh dominated him on saturday

  • CJ got cheated12/7/2009

CJ Spiller can throw the ball, catch the ball, and above all run the ball like no other. Despite Clemson's loss to GT saturday night, CJ Spiller had 4TDs and ran all over the GT defense. Yet come sunday, he is not a finalist, while jokes like Tebow and Ingram get the go ahead. They might as well call it the SEC trophy, because that's all they seem to care about when it comes to stats. Tebow had a mediocre year at BEST, Ingram isn't even Bama's top running back, McCoy did ok, but not fantastic, and if I'm not mistaken Toby didn't lead Stanford anywhere. The only one on that list with any sort of cred is Suh, but the odds of a DT winning it are slim.

Everyone knows Spiller should have an invite to New York instead of this pack of clowns, and the fact that he isn't even invited there only proves that the Heisman doesn't go to the best player in college football.

    Ingram WAS FLAWLESS!!!

Suh is the most dominant player in College Football. I can't believe so much is being given to Ingram, a back from Alabama who isn't even the first best back on his team. Every other Heisman winner back has had more recogniztion going into the final weekend than Ingram.

  • Suh for Heisman12/7/2009

I believe Suh is a Defensive Tackle not a Defensive End... If you are going to call the most dominant force in college football an underdog for this award at least get his position right. As for McCoy and Tebow.... Great Athletes but neither should be in New York. Tebow had a average year and McCoy should get a life time achievement award not the Heisman. Spiller should take there place. If McCoy wins he should be ashamed and give the trophy to Suh, same for Tebow and Ingram. Toby.... if he wins he deserves it.

Are you freaking kidding me? Did anyone see the ACC Championship game Saturday night? Does the fact that CJ Spiller was Clemson in that game and most of the season for that matter mean nothing? What a slap in the face to an incredible athelete!

You can not tell me that this award goes to the best player in college football. If this is the case Ndamukon Suh is in the race all by himself.

  • BSU8112/7/2009

As a Bronco fan, you would think I would have been backing Kellen Moore -- now out of the race. But you would be wrong. I think Ndamukong Suh is without doubt the best player in college football today. This is clear to anyone who has ever seen him play. Recognize greatness and reward it!

  • Herbie Husker12/7/2009

First of all Ndamukong Suh is a defensive tackle... not an end. Second, he was so dominant this year there shouldn't be a reason why he shouldn't win. Ingram will be a close second....
