Helen Wagner, who played the mild-mannered matriarch, Nancy Hughes on CBS soap, As the World Turns since the shows inceptionpassed away May 1, 2010 at the age of ninety-one. A cause of death has yet to be released.

Helen Wagner's Career on As the World Turns

Helen Wagner has been on the CBS soap, As the World Turns since the show premiered in April, 1956 and according to reports she spoke the very first words of the soap, "Good morning dear". Helen Wagner's role as Nancy Hughes on the soap As the World Turns has been acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records as the "longest running character played by one actor on television". Before Wagner played the role of Nancy Hughes, she appeared as Trudy Bauer on the long running CBS soap, Guiding Light during the soap's first years on television in the early 1950's.
