Helena Bonham Carter

Delightfully Strange as Bellatrix Lestrange-- Stranger Still in Sweeney Todd?

Chris M. Carmichael
Attention all fans of Helena Bonham Carter. Hold on tight to your movie popcorn! This December will bring another delicious dose of Helena in yet another delightfully appropriate role. Helena Bonham Carter stars with her real-life friend, Johnny Depp, in Tim Burton's rendition of the dark, classic tale, Sweeney Todd. With these two very popular actors in the starring roles, Sweeney Todd is bound to draw in the crowds this holiday season.

Earlier in the year, fans were treated to Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix. Helena's pale complexion, haunting eyes, and ability to exude unfettered lunacy made her perfect for that role in the Harry Potter movies and she is just as well cast for the role of Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd.

A bit of information for those unfamiliar with Sweeney Todd: Mrs. Lovett becomes a partner in crime to the murderous main character. (I won't give spoilers in this article; don't worry).

It is not every day that one finds a serious veteran actress so suitable to, and at home with, these delightfully dark roles. Helena Bonham Carter is no virgin to Hollywood. Her career spans nearly three decades and her movie roles have included Ophelia in Hamlet, Helen in Howard's End, and Elizabeth Frankenstein in the 1994 version of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, to name just a few. Fans know that, barring unforeseen circumstances, Helena's career shows no sign of fading away any time soon.

If you are a fan of Helena Bonham Carter or Johnny Depp and aren't excited about Sweeney Todd yet, you really should be. This movie is not only dark and weird (as are most movies directed by Tim Burton) but it is a musical. Yes--and the word is out that Johnny Depp and Helena really do sing in this film. What more could we ask for in knife-wielding, mayhem-causing characters than a song?

Sweeney Todd's debut, with all the movie's weirdness, blood, and singing, won't be the only exciting event for Helena Bonham Carter in December. She is also due to give birth-- yet another reason for singing (after the bloody awful pain subsides). This will be her second child with Tim Burton.

She, like Depp, chooses odd parts and movies. I like a lot of her work. In fact, I just watched her in "Merlin" again this past weekend. She played Morgan LaFaye.
