Hell Night

A Fraternity Initiation Goes Hellishly Wrong

Jay Braun
I watched this movie the other night for the second time. I previously had seen it when it came on cable TV one night that I could not sleep way back years ago. The movie is really simple. What happens in you have two men that are pledges from alpha sigma rho fraternity and two girls from a sister sorority. The president of the fraternity requires all new members spend the night at Garth Manor every Hell night. Hell night is the night (or week in many cases) in which many fraternal organizations "test the character" of their perspective members by hazing them. This is basically hassling them or making them make complete idiots out of themselves. After bit of partying they go to the house and Peter tells the group the story of how the family patriarch Raymond killed his family and then hung himself. The only person to survive was his twisted son Andrew and is supposed to be still alive. He then gives them a gun after shooting the lock to the gate of the mansion and tells them they will be back for them in the morning.

Since there are two guys and two girls in the house there are some sexual overtones of course. Seth and Denise immediately decide to hook up. Denise appears to be slightly inebriated and kind of easy and Seth is more than willing to oblige her. Marti is a bit of a tomboy and goes off with Jeff. They sleep in separate beds at first. There is some chemistry there, but they never get it on as they end up running for their lives. Fraternity President Scott decides to scare the four of them and is assisted by his easy and dippy girlfriend May and his fried Scott. The house had been rigged up in various ways to scare them from holograms of supposed ghost and also various noises through a series of gadgets hidden in a maze of corridors under the mansion. The group figures out what is going on and finds some of the wires that are being used to control various practical jokes.

Peter, May and Scott start moving around the outside of the house trying to figure out new jokes once they figure out that the Marti and co cut the wires to some devices they have. Along the way May is beheaded by the real killer. The killer then makes quick work of Scott and finally Peter. Marti and the rest of the pledges realize what is going on and start to find bodies around the house. Since they are locked in they can't leave. They were given a gun to shoot the lock, but it turns out to have blanks in it. Seth ends up climbing the razor fence to go get help but the police don't believe him. Apparently the desk sergeant is sick of all the pranks and threatens to throw Seth in jail, so Seth decides to steal a couple guns and head back to Garth Manor.

In the meantime Denise is killed by the madman living in the Manor. Jeff and Marti decide to try to survive while waiting for Seth and help to return. They have a run in with the madman and follow him into the maze under the mansion. They discover various dead bodies at a table and Denise at the table with them. Seth returns and ends up running into the madman and after a nice battle he shoots and kills him. Seth then goes into the house and lets Marti and Jeff know that the killer is dead. Just then a hand grabs Seth and kills him. Marti and Jeff then must stay alive and try to kill the madman. Long story short there were two madmen. Jeff ends up getting thrown off the roof and killed and Marti makes it to a car. The madman gets on the car and attempts to kill her. Marti then drives the car into the broken fence at the manor and impales him on the fence.

This movie really is not good. I would advise watching it free on one of the various ways that you could or on television when it comes on. The acting basically sucks, the special effects are not that good. It is a tad scary but not too much. There are much better horror films out there. Denise actually gives a much better glimpse of her body than Marti does. The only thing really appealing in the movie is how pretty Marti is and that Denise has a pretty nice body. Save your money and don't buy the DVD unless its really cheap.
