Hello! How is There?

Deepak
Graham Bell invented the telephone long time ago. He would have never thought that his invention would one day prove boon for the entire human race and telephone would become an essential part of their lives. Whenever the phone rings and somebody picks up the receiver, he would invariably say 'Hello'. Now a days saying 'Hello' has become a type of an acknowledgement of having received a call. Initially 'Hello' would have been spoken to greet the 'caller', but gradually people started saying 'Hello' automatically, not realizing that it started as way of conveying greetings to the caller on the other side.

People say 'Hello' in different manners. They use the word as per their own convenience and style. One of my woman bosses would say 'Hello' in her own inimitable style. Whenever she used to receive a call, she would immediate say - 'Haallow', who is there? It would appear that as the person calling is 'hollow' from inside. So whenever, we need to refer to her, we would say to our other colleague - "Madam 'Haallow' wishes to see you in her chamber." She otherwise was very smart and nice, however saying 'Hallow' became her trademark.

One of my dearest friends says 'Hello' on receiving a call, in his own style. As soon as he takes a telephone call, he would say ' Hell-yoo', who is there? It appears as he is saying - "who is (calling) from the 'hell'. It sounds very amusing and funny, but we all love his style. Even after pointing out, he sticks to his style of saying 'Hello'.

There is another one of our friends, who would sound very deep and heavy. He, on taking a call, would say - 'Halluu', who is there? It appears as he is banging the caller through his heavy accent and 'Halluu'. We cannot stop ourselves laughing on hearing his 'Halluu', but now we have become used to 'Halluu'.

One of our colleagues from the fairer sex has a different style in saying ' 'Hello'. Her voice is very thin and sharp. She would, on taking a call, say - 'Hilloo', who is there? It appears, as she is very afraid of the caller and conveying her 'Hello' in a very defensive manner. One of our other friends says 'Hillyooo', in his unique style, as soon as he takes call. Some of the incorrigible friends do not forget to say 'Hello', even after they take a call on their mobile, to me they can see the name and number of the 'caller' on the screen of their mobile handsets and can address the fellow directly, instead of saying 'Hello'. There are some saner souls, one of them on receiving a call says - 'Yes please, who is there?' which sounds better than the distorted versions of 'Hello'.

In today's world some of the people are not aware, what is the significance of saying 'Hello' on taking a call. Without bothering about the word's significance, they continue to use their own unique styles in saying - 'Hello', nonetheless their styles help entertain others who happen to listen to them.

What I think is funny that is Hindi-Urdu speakers (who don't speak English) sometimes also answer the phone by using "Hello."
