Help Build the Self-confidence of Your Child

Building the self-confidence of your child is a lot easier than what you imagined. All it takes is a sincere desire to help your child become a better person. Here are some methods that would help you build the self-confidence of your child:

1.
Show him that your love is unconditional.

A child becomes self-confident when he knows that no matter what happens someone will love him for what he is. Say "I love you," as often as you can. Love should be expressed both in actions and in words. Stress; however, that when he does something wrong, you would not tolerate it and he should be willing to suffer the consequences of his actions. This would prompt him to act responsibly.

2.
Focus on his positive traits.

No one is perfect, so don't expect your child to be perfect. Praise him for his positive traits and advise him on his negative ones. Let him understand that he should keep on improving himself because he is not perfect. There would always be room for improvement. Let him be aware that he has lots of positive traits, and the negative ones are challenges for him to conquer.

3.
Don't humiliate him in public.

This would prove traumatic to a child and would tear down any self-confidence he has in himself. If you, his parents, are the first to put him down, then he would assume that he has no self-worth. Praise him instead in public, and be proud of his achievements.

4.
Let him have some independence.

Allow him to have some sort of independence, i.e. pay his tuition fee, talk to the salesman on the door, go out hiking with friends, and entertain some guests. Let him know that you expect him to do well with his assigned tasks. Don't forget to thank him and give him a pat on the shoulder for a job well done.

In cases when he commits mistakes, don't create a big fuss out of it, tell him why it went wrong, and make it a learning experience for him. But never ridicule or put him down. Stress the value of learning from one's mistakes.

5.
Teach him the value of positive thinking.

Teach him how to psyche himself every morning when he wakes up. Let him appreciate what he has, by being grateful for those blessings. Make him understand that oftentimes, the person who stymies his progress towards success is - himself. He should not limit his capabilities, but instead psyche himself everyday that he could meet any challenge that comes his way. "What the mind can conceive the body can achieve."

Self -confidence is a trait that is not built overnight. It takes constant practice and a positive attitude to achieve it. Be supportive of your child and help him build his self confidence.
