Help Your Child Learn About Books by Using an App

Mrs. Renee

If your child is a struggling reader, or if they are just getting started with reading, than the itTunes app called "Book of Me", may be of some help to them. What is really nice about this is that your child can become the main character in their own story. Each day they can create a different story about themselves. The story can be about what they did that day, or what they plan to do. You can customize it for each of your children, this way they can take turns using the app, and each one will still have their own story. The stories are animated and your child will basically be setting up the stories and decided the entire theme. After they have finished creating the main character (themselves), and the story they can record themselves talking in the book. You can use this program on your iPhone, iPod touch or your iPad.

It is a really nice way for young children to learn all about how a book is put together. If your child is not in school yet, or if you are a homeschooler this app may really help to give your child a jump start in books. Instead of just giving your child the app to play around with, why not guide them through it. The stories themselves are very educational and not just about random topics. Of course the main draw for many young children is that they are the main characters in the story.

Personally I really like to have my kids go through the app, and then create a real story about themselves. You can take the same story you just created using the app feature and have them copy the story onto construction paper. As they are copying the story explain the different parts of a book to them. They can then add in pictures of themselves to the hard copy of their story. Of course the hard copy of their book will not be the same as the digital one in the app, but it is a great way to help them learn new skills. For example while they are copying the story, they will be working on their handwriting skills, as well as spelling skills. I also found that it helps them not to be so glued to technology. Of course it does help to keep them busy while you are running errands as well, so technology is not all bad in this case.
