Help Your Child Overcome Recital Jitters

Todd Hicks

Do you have children who become nervous and tense when it is time to have a recital? If they have this problem, you must help them solve it. You will learn how to help your children cope with recital jitters.

They must get ready for the big day. A good way for them to do it is to practice. You should have them play, sing, speak or act out their material in front of you. This will enable them to rehearse in front of someone they know very well and trust. It will also give you a golden opportunity to critique their performance.

You can help them by getting them to avoid looking at the audience. If they play the piano, you should remind them that they will have a hard time seeing the members of the audience if they are supposed to perform on a large piano. If they play another instrument, you should train them to mainly watch what they are doing while tuning out the audience.

You have to get them to think of the audience in a positive way. You can do this by telling them the people sitting in the audience are there to see them succeed. As they learn to think of the people they are performing for as their friends, they will realize that these people are there pulling for them to succeed rather than being there pulling for them to fail.

They have to be able to quickly deal with setbacks. Tell them, "If you make an error while you are on stage, keep playing and pretend like you did nothing wrong. Even if others catch your error, they will move on and not hold it against you." Once they realize they do not have to be perfect, they are likely to settle down.

There are other things they can do to reduce their nervousness. These include having self-confidence, speaking clearly and paying close attention to their posture by sitting or standing up straight.

Use these tips to help your kids cope with their recital jitters!
