Help! My Closet is Overflowing!

Karen Gros

It's no big secret that women love fashion and clothes. Considering the condition my closet is currently in and giving some deep thought to the situation, I came up with several reasons as to why my closet is in this condition. Can you relate to this?

We also love to shop which can lead to buying more items of clothing than we actually need. This can be a habit for some and an addiction for others.

Women have sensitive bodies and mood swings, which is yet another cause to send us to the mall. There are several reasons why we may have up to three or four (sometimes more) sizes of clothing hanging in the closet. Here are a few reasons that come to my mind:

We have to be prepared for those monthly cycles and weight gain. We many need a larger size clothing during this time of the month. You know, we want to be comfortable. It's bad enough having to deal with cramps for several days.

Then there is the super diet that we go on right after the holidays and New Year. Yes, we may lose a few pounds in anticipation of wearing a bikini or other bathing suit on the beach for that long anticipated vacation, and this is yet another reason why we accumulate different sizes of clothing.

Having a baby will result in extra pounds even after the baby is born until we lose all the extra weight. We have to have clothes that fit, so this is another way we accumulate so many clothes in different sizes.

We are attached to certain pieces of clothing such as dresses worn to special occasions, or maybe it is just a favorite piece of clothing that you have had for years and simply can't do without. Hey, if it fits, wear it!

Another reason that some won't dare admit to is just plain laziness. Some have packed closets and wardrobes simply because they are too busy or just can't make themselves do the chore of going through the closet and reorganizing things and taking out items that no longer fit. I have to admit that is is a chore I hate to do and I put it off as long as I can.

Weight gain due to health issues. Sometimes when women gain weight due to medical conditions, they will also need to buy larger size clothing. This is hard to accept for some and they hold on to the smaller sizes hoping that they will return to their former size. This doesn't always happen, but hey, I can keep dreaming, can't I?

And last, another reason you may have extra things stashed in the closet is that some items were given to you as a gift and you really can't stand them, yet hate to give away or throw away. These items can be donated to a local charity, shhhh, I won't tell!

Now that I've put all these reasons down on paper as to why people, ladies in general have packed and stacked closets, I'm going to get busy and tackle cleaning my closet out. I can't let myself fall into that lazy category!

Suz, I bet my closets in the old house are smaller than yours! Can barely get a clothes hanger in them due to width!

Lol, clean it up, then come clean mine ;) We have very small closets in our house and I really need to go through and throw out stuff I don't wear so my real clothes can breathe!

    I sympathize.

I totally understand where you're coming from. I did do a little reorganizing of my closet about a month ago and got rid of a few things, but then I went and bought some more!
