Ash Animal Rescue is asking for donations for a canine who was knocked down by a car in Carlow Town and had to undergo surgery.

"Despite the best medical care, he was still limping and we feared it would be impossible to home him," said an agency rep. "Long story short: Steve (the dog) once again underwent surgery and once again we are looking at a large bill of around $1,500."

In other pet news, The Humane Society of Otter Tail County is filling up again and many cats are in danger of being euthanized Feb. 25.

With Feb. 20th-26th marking the Animal Legal Defense Fund's Third Annual National Justice for Animals Week, it seems only fitting that the following other dog and cat news be brought to readers' attention:

Dogs in Yuba City, Northern California are in dire need of adoption and the Sutter County Animal Control phone number is 530-822-7375 (102 2nd Street).

Jinx, a female pit bull in Fredericksburg, VA, is in urgent need of foster or adoption and is currently living in a shelter where she has been since October. For information, email emillerculpeper@msn.com.

Rutherford, NC Animal Shelter is also in urgent need for those interested in fostering or adopting animals. The contact number is 828-287-7738.

"Animal victims of abuse cannot speak for themselves so concerned citizens and our legal system must speak for them," states a press release from the Animal Legal Defense Fund. "You can take action for animals right now by letting your own community members know how they can join the campaign to fight animal abuse and honor animal abuse victims with a clear, concise letter to the editor."
