Help, I Have the Flu

Shannon Frye
Having the flu doesn't necessarily mean that you are getting sick or throwing up. The flu can make you extremely tired to the point that you sleep for over 24 hours in one day and still feel tired. You will most likely also feel a little queezy. I had the flu for about 3 days and I felt sick but never physically ending up praying to the porcelain god. One way to avoid getting sick is to avoid people that are sick but this is impossible to do. The best thing that you can do is take vitamins and drink a lot of orange juice to help your immune system protect you against colds and the flu.

Usually it takes about 1-2 weeks to actually catch the flu or a cold from somebody that you've been exposed to. It's possible to be around sick people and never get sick if you get enough sleep and vitamin c. Look at doctors for example, you would think that they would be sick 24 hours a day but they never are. You could also look into getting a flu shot which lasts about 1 year. If you have small children it's definitely worth getting the flu shot. Getting one quick shot is much more easy than dealing with a sick child for a week or more.

You need to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. If you lose a certain amount of sleep one night, sleeping more the next night does not make up for this. You need to steady amount of rest each night but not more than 10 hours of sleep. When you get more sleep than you should you often end up feeling grouchy and irritable. The best thing to do is stick to 8 or 9 hours of sleep a night.

When you feel as if you are getting sick or everybody living in your house has already had the flu than your time has come. Drink as much orange juice as possible and get more sleep than normal. Once you have come down with the flu make sure that you stock up on coolaid, orange juice, sprite and light foods. You will most likely not want to eat anything other than jello, applesauce or soup. Make sure that even if you don't feel hungry you still get something in your stomach. If you're not able to keep anything down, wait until your stomach calms down for 3 hours. After that time try to eat something very light in very small quantities, such as a half a cup of applesauce.

Being dehydrated is the worst thing that could happen to a person. If it gets to the point that you need to go in for IVS you're looking at about a $1200.00 bill from the emergency room and you will be waiting there for at least 2 hours for the fluids to drain. Don't let it get to this point, make sure you take small bites of food and that you keep it down.
