2010 Haitian Earthquake Relief

Arene Penelope
Cries from earthquake victims wedged between vehicles and under collapsed buildings; from babies, children, and parents with lacerations or in need of amputations; from weakened citizens wanting nothing more than food and water; and from loved ones and friends of the non-survivors - all paint the scene of what it really means to be in the worst of times. America's economic crisis does not compare with the depletion and heartache experienced by the victims of Haiti's magnitude 7.0 earthquake on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Now is the time for all Americans to search deep within themselves to make an effort in any way possible to come to Haiti's rescue. Various opportunities are available for South Carolinians to help by donating to the following local nonprofit organizations in Greenville, South Carolina.

Church Relief Efforts

As the Roman Catholic faith is widely-practiced in Haiti, American Catholic churches are rallying together to raise money for Haitian earthquake victims. In addition to a special collection during their Sunday mass services, local Catholic churches welcome check donations by mail to their Charleston, South Carolina address listed on the website of St. Mary's Church in Greenville, South Carolina.

Also accepting financial donations is The First Haitian Evangelical Wesleyan Church in Mauldin, South Carolina. In an interview with WYFF4 News, Pastor Patrick Gue, a native of Haiti, expressed that he has received no response from his siblings in Haiti. As a Haitian relief effort, this church is accepting checks that may be made out to: Haitian Relief Effort, 501 E. Butler Rd., Mauldin, SC 29662.

The Salvation Army Relief Efforts

Also, non-monetary donations may be dropped off at the local Salvation Army. Other nationwide Salvation Army Haiti relief efforts include donating online at The Salvation Army's website, calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY (725-2769) or texting the word "HAITI" to 52000 to donate $10.

American Red Cross Relief Efforts

American Red Cross was established in Haiti in 1932 and provides programs such as disaster preparedness and HIV/AIDS prevention. They have pledged $1,000,000 in Haitian earthquake relief efforts. While earthquake volunteers, food, water, and clothing are not being accepted as part of this relief, financial donations may made online at the local website of American Red Cross of the Upstate.

These are just a few community 2010 Haitian earthquake relief efforts in Greenville, South Carolina. Contributions from local citizens will not only benefit Haiti's present state but will also help them to thrive in the future in terms of quality education, health, living conditions, and food. By contributing locally, residents are helping to bring quality of life to Haitians.
