Help Keep School Zones Safe for Children: Report Bad Driving to Authorities
Reminding Drivers to Slow Down and Watch for Children
Walk Your Children to School or Bus Stop
Walking your child to their schools and bus stops will be one form of protection for your children. You can prevent dangers by assisting your children when crossing streets. This is a good way to assess the dangers in the school zone. Further talk to your children about these safety concerns. Make sure your children know to stop, look and listen for cars before crossing the street.
Observe and Watch for Bad Drivers
Write down descriptions of drivers disobeying the rules of the road. Note the time of day. Is it company or city vehicle? Look for bus numbers, route numbers, vehicle numbers and license plates.
Contact Business Owners to Report Bad Driving in Company Vehicles
Most companies take their drivers behavior seriously. Report bad driving to people in charge. Give as much detail as you can. Let them know if you notice vehicles from their business violating the road laws often. Owners or management will likely call a meeting with their company on the issue.
Contact Your Police Department
Report your concerns with the police department. Ask if they can assist by patrolling the school zone. Drivers will slow down and stop for children in crosswalks while police force is present. Smile and wave to police officers that patrol school zones. Let them know you're happy with their presence.
Submit an Open Letters to Newspaper Editors
Express your concerns to the community by writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Remind people of the speed limit of the school zone. Share the dangers you have witnessed in the school zones.
Write an open letter to the newspaper when you notice change in driving habits. Thank members of the community for their participation in making the school zones safer. This will encourage people to continue their efforts.
Repeat These Steps When Necessary
Often the school zone problems resurface each year. Repeat all the steps necessary to get the school zone safe again. Your efforts will remind people to slow down and watch for children. In addition, you will be encouraging the community to work together to resolve the problem.
