Help for Overweight Kids: 3 Quick and Easy Healthy Snack Ideas

Maggie Blake
Helping your child who is overweight to get control of their weight and health is a huge task. However, it is imperative that parents help their overweight kids learn to manage their eating habits and choices early in life in order to achieve the best outcome. Overweight kids did not become overweight on their own, since it is the adults in their lives who purchase and prepare their food. Therefore, if a parent of an overweight child wants to help their kid to avoid a life of low self esteem and unnecessary health problems, it must be the parent who first takes control and begins making changes.

A great place to start when it comes to helping an overweight child is to focus on the child's snacks. Snacks are a big part of most kids' lives, and making better choices in this area can mean huge benefits. If you are the parent of an overweight child who wants to create a healthier and happier lifestyle for your kid, try removing unhealthy snacks with the following healthier snack alternatives.

Yogurt - Yogurt is a healthy alternative to any sugar laden snack that might be prevalent in an overweight child's life. Since most kids love to snack, they need appropriate choices. Yogurt contains protein and calcium, as well as helpful bacteria that support your child's colon health and immune system. Fortunately, there are several yogurt products on the market now, so even if the overweight kids in your life don't love the texture of yogurt straight out of the container, you have options. Let them try frozen GoGurt, or Danimals yogurt drinks. They're bound to like at least one of these choices.

Apples with peanut butter - A great snack for kids, apples provide fiber and vitamin C. Additionally, studies show that apples are beneficial to kids with asthma, and apples, when consumed on a regular basis, also add protection against various cancers. Peanut butter provides protein, but it's best to look for a peanut butter which contains lower sugar levels, which can generally be found on the grocery store shelf right alongside higher sugar content varieties. Apples with peanut butter may sound like an unlikely combination, but it's actually a really delicious snack that most kids love.

Raisins and sunflower seeds - Common snacks among overweight children include gummy candies and various types of chips. For parents who want to help their overweight kids to form better eating habits, it makes sense to do everything in your power to substitute healthier choices in place of horrible snack products like gummy candies and chips. Try raisins and sunflower seeds instead. Raisins supply ever important fiber (chances are, your overweight child's regularity is an issue, and this contributes to poor health), as well as potassium and iron. Sunflower seeds contain healthy fats, proteins, minerals, fibers, and Vitamin E. So the next time your overweight child wants gummy candy or chips, try offering these healthier alternatives instead.

Helping your overweight child to become a healthier person is the best gift you can give them. They don't deserve a lifetime of ridicule, prejudice, and poor health. Allowing a kid to remain overweight prevents them from fully becoming the individual they were meant to be. Replacing atrociously unhealthy snack products with nutrition packed alternatives is a great life change towards helping any kid who is overweight.

lol, yes! i went to an "open" classroom in the 70's (we lovingly refer to it as "hippie" school! but it's like unschooling, on a school campus), and we were only permitted to bring healthy foods and our snack time was a communal activity. one of the "approved" snacks that we could bring (no oreos allowed!) was ants on a log. this is also where i was introduced to apples with peanut butter, which turned out to be a lifelong favorite. my kids LOVE it too.
