I don't have that much extra time on my hands on the weekends, but i do like to spend a few hours here and there at the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, whenever I can. I planned on getting a group together to help serve the lunch, so I gathered some of my friends and co-workers and we scheduled a Saturday date.

We not only needed to get there before the 1:30 p.m. serve time, we also needed to go to the grocery store to shop for our guests. We had so much fun - this is the only volunteer opportunity that I know of where the volunteers plan, shop for, prepare and serve the meal.

Our group of 10 made hamburgers and hot dogs, cream of broccoli soup, green beans and a salad. We almost forgot to buy the beverages, but luckily, one of the other volunteers remembers, just as we were leaving the store. The cool thing about it was that we got to eat with the guests. We bought enough food to prepare for ourselves so we wouldn't run out. The guests were so respectful, happy and thankful and we were equally as such toward them. We had so much fun, laughing and telling stories, that I wish I could donate more time and help out more often.
