Helping teens to learn to save is not an easy task. There are so many things out there that your teen will want. Clothes, music, and movies top the list. Teaching your teen to budget their money will have long-term benefits for them. There are some great tips and helps for your teens.
Help your teen set short range goals - Your teen may want that new MP3 like all their friends have. Encourage them to start saving for it. Show them how just a set amount set aside every week will help them reach their goals.
Help your teen set long range goals - Teens need to see that saving larger things also. College savings programs or down payments for that first car are excellent long term goals that a teen can clearly see the outcome.
Help your teen see the outcome of their spending - This may be a hard one for some parents. Give your child a set amount of money to last them a set amount of time. If they spend it all do not give them more. If they choice to spend all their money the first day at McDonalds, they will need to spend the rest of the time without any funds. This should teach them to make their money last.
Help your teen set up a budget - Learning to budget will help your teen learn how to make that money last. It also teaches them to put money aside to save. Sit down with your teen and have them right a list of their expenses.
Teen expenses should include all categories. Have them list every thing from college savings to MP3 savings. Have them figure in a budget category for little things such as those McDonald's trips.
Help your teen shop - When your teen has saved up for that purchase and they are ready to buy, help them to shop for it. Show them how to do comparison shopping. Teach them to shop around for the best price. Make them aware of the fact they need to check their receipts for accurate billing. Impress upon them they need to learn to get the best value for their money.
Help your teen earn money - Encourage your teen to secure employment. Even volunteering for no pay will show them rewards. Instead of just giving your teen money, help them to learn the joys of earning their own way in the world.
Teaching your teen to save money and to budget what they do have are important skills. They will benefit greatly from this knowledge for the rest of their lives. Fiscal responsibility is a way of life.
