Help Yourself Overcome Depression

Kristie Sweet
Depression afflicts nearly 21 million adults in America alone, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. More and more people these days are resorting to medications to feel better. While some antidepressants are effective, some people suffering from depression can't find a cure. Some medications may work partway some time, but that's hardly comfort for someone who has dealt with the horrors of chronic depression for some time. Sometimes medications coupled with certain activities can be more effective for helping people overcome depression, whether major depression or temporary, than medication alone.

Find a reason to keep going. This may mean finding a reason to get out of bed or a reason to overcome suicidal thoughts. The reason you find may seem inconsequential or downright silly to others, like getting a latte from your favorite coffee place or putting on your fuzzy slippers. It doesn't matter what other people would say; it only matters if it helps you find a reason.

Go outside. Sunlight increases production of endorphins, the body's natural fighters to help overcome depression.

Exercise. It may be difficult, particularly if you are experiencing the physical pain of major depression. But even mild, short exercise is better than nothing. Endorphins are released during exercise just as exposure to sunlight. That plus the natural boost of energy achieved from exercise can be very helpful toward recovery.

People. It is too easy to fold within ourselves when we are feeling low. The more we withdraw from others, the more depression takes hold, making it more difficult to overcome. Instead of allowing that to continue, force yourself to get out into a public setting. Spending time with good friends or family is great, but even window shopping or sitting by yourself in a coffee shop is a good step if you've been huddled at home alone. If you've been hanging around someone else who is negative or is feeding your own negativity, however, find a way to remove yourself from that person. You need to start building back a positive attitude, and avoiding someone like this will help overcome depression.

Focus on something positive. Find a person, a thing, an idea that reminds you how important you are. A letter from a child, a puppy, a rose bush can all be used to overcome the pessimistic feelings. If you find yourself thinking negative thoughts while focusing on the item, chase them away. You can overcome depression. You have to pull through, because you are needed.

Depression is a dreadful condition that can create a cycle of physical ailments and despair. But hope exists within yourself. Choose just one thing to do for yourself, and add more as you are ready. Medication and therapy may be necessary to help you pull out of the depths, but you can help take the steps to get there. You are able to help yourself overcome depression.
