During your pregnancy, there will be lots of names thrown at you. The older relatives are likely to choose old fashion names for your child, which is fine if you wish to select a common name that has been around a long time. If you have other children, you may hear suggestions from their favorite cartoons or movies. While you can certainly consider the advice from others, naming the baby is ultimately the decision of the parents. Do not feel threatened that you must use your Aunt Rose's choice simply because she is Aunt Rose.
Take into consideration how a name will affect your child's future. It is not advised to choose names that rhyme with your last name, or, when pairing with your surname, make a funny phrase. If there is any way your child can be made fun of by his/her name, other kids are sure to find it. You don't want your angel to be the object of ridicule, so think before you fill out the birth certificate.
Don't go overboard trying to create an unique name. Choosing something that is very difficult to pronounce or spell can also humiliate the child when he/she becomes older. Trust me, it is a bit embarrassing to have your name said incorrectly. If you insist on your child having a unique name, you can simply make a popular name different by altering the spelling a bit. With that said, do not change it to the point of overkill.
Choosing a name for your new bundle of joy will have an effect on the rest of his life. Be sure you are helping that future rather than harming it with a name that can be easily made fun of, misspelled, or mispronounced. I'm not suggesting you go with the ever popular "John" or "Jane," but just try not to get too carrying away in your baby naming quest.
