Helpful Homemade Remedies for the Common Cold

Ruth Carter
Every year, many people experience common cold symptoms and feel miserable for the duration of the cold. In this article, the author will share a few homemade remedies that she and her family have found helpful in combating the common cold.

When an individual is dealing with a stuffy nose, a crackly cough, and scratchy throat, nothing soothes the soul more than a nice, hot bowl of chicken noodle soup. This author's recipe for this soup is as follows:

1 lb. of chicken

1 lb. box of organic spaghetti noodles

1 cup of organic carrots, chopped

1 48 oz. container of organic chicken broth

2 tsp. of sea salt

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Bake chicken for 25 minutes at 400 degrees. Meanwhile, prepare the spaghetti noodles as directed on the package. After the chicken is cooked and the noodles are prepared, place the chicken, spaghetti, carrots, chicken broth, and sea salt into a dutch oven, and heat to boiling. Once the soup is boiling, turn the heat back to medium-low and cook for 30 minutes or until the carrots are at the desired tenderness. Serve.

Raw honey is a wonderful soother for a hacking cough and a sore throat. Simply take a tablespoon or two of raw honey every few hours. Remember not to give raw honey to any child under the age of one. Also, if an individual suffers from diabetes, agave nectar can be used in place of honey, and the same result will be achieved.

An apple cider vinegar cocktail as this author calls it can be helpful in boosting one's energy level and in causing the body to flush out the mucus from the cold. The recipe for this cocktail calls for 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons of either honey or agave nectar, and 8-10 ounces of spring or filtered water. This author uses the Bragg's brand of apple cider vinegar, for it is organic and contains the "mother." This drink can be served cold or warm depending on one's preference.

Hot herbal teas are also soothing when one is struggling with a cold. This author and her family typically choose peppermint, pomegranate, and other fruit teas for use during such a bought. Also, if one is experiencing watery eyes from a cold, chamomile tea bags can be steeped, somewhat cooled, and laid upon the eyelids to help with this symptom.

Lastly but not least, rest is so important when trying to overcome a cold. Without rest, the body cannot do the repair work that it needs to do to restore an individual to his or her normal portion of health.

The next time that a cold strikes, try these homemade remedies. May good health return soon.
