The first method we will discuss involved crate training. No one likes to sleep where they use the potty. This applies to dogs as well as humans, and other domesticated animals. You must use caution to purchase the right size of crate. The dog should be able to stand up, and turn around in the crate. However if the crate is much bigger, the crate training method will not work. The dog will simply designate one side for potty breaks and the other half for sleeping. This will defeat the purpose. After the dog learns the proper methods for potty time outside, many dogs will continue to sleep in the crate out of habit.
Another important topic to bring up is when are you taking the dog out to use the potty? A small puppy will need to go outside at more frequent intervals than adult dogs. As the bladder is not as big as it will be, when the puppy continues to grow, it is important to give the puppy ample opportunity to evacuate their bowel and bladder outside. If you simply put only take your puppy out once or twice a day, the puppy will continue to relieve his or herself indoors. Puppies just can't hold it.
You will realistically want to take the puppy outdoors every hour to hour and a half. The puppy should be praised when he evacuates his bowels and bladder outside. After the puppy has done his business, you need to offer praise, and possibly a treat, as a reward for good behavior. Trust me on this one, the puppy will learn remarkably fast. Most dogs are easily motivated by food.
After feeding it is a good idea to allow between twenty and thirty minutes for digestion, then take the puppy outdoors. Chances are the puppy will be ready for eliminating.
If you are having issues with the puppy not wanting to eliminate outdoors, you will need to invest money on specialty products designed for house training. I use wee wee for my dog. He is two years old, but easily distracted. I use wee wee to get his attention, and remind him that yeah, he has to pee while he is outdoors. Wee Wee is a chemical that smells like urine. You simply place a few drops in the area you wish for your dog to eliminate, and allow him to sniff around. The dog will urinate on that spot.
Additionally you will want to get an odor eliminator, because like it or not, if your dog smells a spot he has eliminated on, chances are he will do it on that spot again. I use Natural Chemistry's 100% natural stain and odor eliminator. It is unconditionally guaranteed and works well.
I hope this advice helps you to house break your puppy.
