Helpful Tips for Proposing at Christmas

Amy Stepp
Christmas proposals are the hardest ones to make unique. It is a Holiday known for the proposal "will you marry me" line. You have been ready for months now and can not wait any longer for the big question to be popped. The ring has been bought. You may have already asked for the dad's hand in marriage for his daughter. Only problem is, you do not know how to go about making this Christmas proposal a surprise. One that she will not be expecting. I have some great tips on how to make this Holiday a memory for you and her and to keep that wow factor in check.

One - Christmas Dinner
If you and your soon to be fiance are heading to a families house for dinner here is a good time to pop that question. However, don't do it yourself. If there are little kids in the room, send one over to her with a gift bag with a letter inside the bag stating "meet your secret Santa in the kitchen" or whatever room you like. When she walks into the room, already be on your knee with the ring box opened and in hand. She won't know what hit her!

Two - Christmas Sleigh Ride
If you have an option in your town that offers sleigh rides in the snowy woods, then this is perfect for a proposal. Ask her to marry you about half-way through the ride. To give it more dramatical affect, have the person driving the sleigh stop at a scenic part of the ride so you can propose to her why she is wondering why the sleigh is halting.

Three - Decorations
All girls love to decorate the tree, so if you ask your girlfriend over to help you decorate yours or your family's tree she will be thrilled. She will be even more ecstatic when she grabs the box that holds the angel for the tree topper. On the angel place the ring around the angels hands. When she sees the angel, tell her she has been the angel in your life and then proceed with the proposal.

Four - Christmas Cookies
Bake a dozen of her favorite Christmas cookies. If you are not a baker (which most men aren't) then buy a dozen from her favorite bakery. Make sure 11 of them are not decorated, and one is iced and ready to go. The iced, decorated cookie, place the ring on top of it so it stands out. If you are getting your cookies done professional remember to tell them you need just one iced and have them work the ring into that cookies decoration. Call her over and ask her if she would like to help you finish icing some cookies (mention they are her favorites). Place all the cookies on a cookie sheet with the one decorated in the middle. When she gets over there, tell her the middle cookie you already did yourself, but not sure if it was done right. She will more then likely head over to the cookie to check it out and then she will find the ring.

Five - Lump of Coal
If you and your girlfriend love to play piratical jokes on one another, here is a great proposal. Most novelty stores or joke stores have lumps of coal for sale during the Christmas Holiday. I have seen alot of these coal pieces be joke boxes that open up to a gift box. Place your ring in one of these joke coal gift boxes and then place it in a special stocking to give to her as a present. When she sees the lump of coal she will laugh until she opens it up to the wonderful surprise on the inside! Make sure as she is opening the coal gift box, you are starting to get down on one knee.

Six - Candy Cane Path
Before she gets home one day, take a bunch of candy canes and link them together, starting at the front door and make a candy cane trail to the bathroom. In the bathroom she will find a bubble bath drawn for her, with peppermint candles (bath and body works has the best ones) filling up the room. Then you pop out from behind the door with the ring in hand telling her that you always want to make coming home to you a life long event!

Seven - Mistletoe-toe
Place a piece of mistletoe-toe in a great location and make sure you and her find a way to get under it. Of course everyone knows the Christmas rule of kissing under the mistletoe-toe but tell her there is a new law out there. When she laughingly asks what that is, tell her it is the law that requires girlfriends to say yes to their boyfriends when they show them this ring, and then pop the ring out!

Eight - Sit on Santa's Lap
You know the jolly, red check man that graces the malls every year during the Christmas season? Well, the morning prior to your proposal, get up there to talk to him and ask if he could get involved in your question to your girlfriend. If he and the staff says yes, then that evening while strolling the mall and doing a little shopping, tell your girlfriend it would be cute to get your pictures made with Santa. She will be surprised at the kidness in you, she will say yes. While she is on one knee and you are on the other, when Santa asks her what she wants for Christmas, and she answers him, then have Santa say to her, "do you know what _____ (insert your name here) wants for Christmas? He wants a YES!" and at the exact moment Santa says yes, have the ring in your hand right in front of her.

Nine - Christmas Card
These days you can create just about any card you want. Head over to www.walgreens.com and create a Christmas card with pictures of you two on it. Pick significant pictures that were taken with a lot of meaning behind them. On the inside of the card just express to her the words you want to say. Tell her how she makes you feel, what she means to you and how you will never be able to live without her. At the end of the card message put this. "Oh and before I forget will you please...." and be on that knee ready to say "marry me".

Ten - Upgraded Traditional
Most people like traditional proposals at Christmas. You know the ones where you wrap the ring in the box and she opens it, you ask her the big question. The one she is expecting and gets. There is nothing wrong with that, however make her think she is not always right when it comes to thinking she knows everything. Start with the small ring box, wrap it and put it in a bigger box, stuff with tissue paper so the ring box don't flop around and then wrap that box. Put that second box into a little bigger third box. Continue this process until you have a box as big as you want to get. The more and more boxes she goes through and does not see the ring, the more she will start to think there is no ring in here! Once she gets to the ring she will be surprised!
